Overview

Atlanta may be well-known for its vibrant hip hop culture, but this ever-growing city mixes many cultures together to create a wonderful community. With an exciting food scene, neighborhood festivals, fine arts district, golfing communities, and a big race track, there is always something to do. Many neighborhoods in Atlanta have a farmer's market and places of worship conveniently located nearby. Plus, Atlanta is home to numerous colleges and nationally-recognized universities. A beloved pastime of the local community is watching professional sports teams play at any of Atlanta's state-of-the-art stadiums.

Approximately 434 miles of the Chattahoochee River runs through several of the neighborhood areas. Outside the city, you can explore any of the large lakes. These lakes are perfect for water sports, boat docking, or rentals. The area around each body of water also offers sublime hiking trails as well as peaceful locations for cabin rentals. Atlantans also enjoy a beautiful destination that’s only a few hours away: the crystal clear emerald coast of Destin Beach, Florida.

Atlanta is located in the Bible Belt, and this does impact the hours of business on Sunday. Check before + 'you go out because retailers commonly close shop early or deeply limit the hours of operation, in accordance with their faith.

Local Insight

Downtown

Downtown

This is a business district with some residential buildings. When touring Downtown, you will find restored old homes as well as urban farms. These lush locations commonly grow produce for local markets. Downtown is also where the Hawks and Falcons call home. At one point in time, the Atlanta Braves resided here as well, but they recently moved to Marietta, located just outside the city. This same area is home to the Philips Arena where the locals go to enjoy live music and shows. Another great attraction is the Georgia Aquarium. Tour this aquatic paradise to experience the largest aquarium in the Western hemisphere.

The Atlanta Beltline is where residents enjoy outdoor fitness with several paved miles weaving through Downtown and beyond. Quaint restaurants and well-known favorites, such as the Hard Rock Café, are located here. Watch out for Labor Day weekend when Dragoncon comes to town. You never know what or who you will see walking down the streets! During the rest of the year, Georgia State University keeps the Downtown area feeling a little hip despite the business district typically having a reputation for being tight-laced.

Nightlife

If you embrace the life of a night owl, Atlanta has you covered! Generally, nightlife is reserved to Buckhead, Midtown, and Downtown areas. The other metro areas are mostly residential. Live music can be found in local pubs and venues all around the metro area, but the larger entertainment acts and dance clubs are in the heart of the city. You can find elegant cocktail bars on rooftops, lively dance hot spots, and even racier clubs when the mood strikes you. Metro Atlanta caters to any way you want to spend your late nights.

Satisfy Your Tastebuds

Atlanta has become a mainstream food lover's city over the past decade. Celebrity chefs have taken up locations in Atlanta and beyond to cash in on the local demand. Metro residents looking to delight their palates with new and interesting foods can regularly partake in the dizzying variety of eateries that these phenomenal chefs provide.

Due to Atlanta being one of the more affordable major US cities, single-owner restaurants are in every nook and cranny you can find. The food truck culture is alive and well in the city, and it's usually easy to find a park or a place to socialize while you feast on the savories and sweets.

Atlanta has populations of Mexican, Korean, Indian, and Mediterranean cultures, so these cuisines are heavily represented. Fine dining is mainly found in the Midtown as well as Buckhead areas, and the city has many family-friendly restaurants with moderate prices. As an added bonus, because of the temperate climate, it's not hard to find al fresco dining wherever you chose to call home.

Weather

Atlanta is called a green city because, as you land at Hartsfield Airport, you will notice many trees in every direction that you can see. The warm and often humid climate combined with plenty of rain makes everything grow, from grass to the infamous kudzu vines!

Long summer days can easily reach over 95 degrees. Spring and fall start off as chilly cozy mornings and warm up later in the day. It's common to see temperatures range from 40 to 70 in a single day. Keep a sweater handy for mornings. Winters are short with very few days of freezing weather. Occasional snow may occur 1-2 times per year, but it doesn't last more than a couple days. Atlanta does experience hurricane season as well as scattered tornadoes throughout the year. The mountains are a short 90-minute scenic drive if you need to cool off for the weekend.

Travel and Transport

Atlanta is definitely a driving town, and traffic can be a challenge for commuters. Public transportation, including a rail and bus system, is available in certain areas. The rail is limited to two lines reaching from an airport terminal south of the city all the way up north to Sandy Springs. Living close to a train station is encouraged if you work close to one of these stops.

If you live north of the city and need to take I-85 to Norcross, Duluth, or beyond, you can purchase a Peach Pass. This pass makes it possible for residents to use the express lane regardless of whether you drive alone or opt to carpool. GA400 will take you north out of Atlanta to Sandy Springs, Roswell, and Alpharetta, but make time for the trip because GA400 does not have an express or multi-passenger lane.

I-75 and I-85 are the main roads that go through Downtown Atlanta. Both Interstates offer carpool lanes. Rush hours are from 6:30-9:30 AM in the morning and 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM in the evening.

Public Transportation You Should Know
MARTA

MARTA

MARTA is Atlanta’s main bus and rail system. It’s a reliable means of transport within city limits. Day, week, and month passes are available. A comprehensive list for getting around outside of the metro area, such as Gwinnett, Cobb, and Cherokee counties, can be found here. Some areas offer express buses, commuter trains, or a paratransit service. Note that not all buses operate on Sundays. Some counties have senior shuttles, making it possible for seniors to maintain independence without the expense of a vehicle.
