Resident 2020 - 2023

Break Ins, Broken Elevators, Sporadic Hot Water

I lived at the Massee for almost 4 years. DO NOT LIVE HERE. Almost all of the residents I know (including myself) had their car broken into at least once while parked in the parking lot or in front of the building. The hot water gets shut off for some reason or another for hours at a time at least once a month. I couldn’t shower for almost a full 24 hours because the hot water was shut off. The apartment is 8 floors and yet the elevator breaks down at least once every 2 weeks. There has been such a high rate of turnover of residents, handy people, cleaners, and owners. There were two break ins (once someone tried to kick in the door to a girl’s apartment and once the guy got into the building with a crowbar) while I lived there. The new owners chose to spend money on aesthetic things like lawn care and new bushes rather than fixing up the actual things residents care about. Also there are literally no amenities so I’m not sure what your thousand dollars a month are going towards especially when most units don’t have washer or dryer hookups, so… See More>

I highly recommend living at the Massee - the management is very responsive to any maintenance issues I have, and I love the charm of the old building! It's very well kept, and the walls are so thick between apartments I've never heard anything from my neighbours.

This place is the worst. A new person took over management and promptly made a lot of superficial renovations in places like the lobby. I commented to many people that the rent was sure to see a hike, based on the spending. Sure enough, the manager waylaid me in the parking lot one afternoon and told me rent was going up about 150, and since I was past my renewal date I needed to sign my new contract that week. I told her I had to think if it was worth it - the apartment has no washer/dryer, I had to hand wash dishes, it was tiny, it had ac units in the windows and a building wide furnace which meant it was always broiling in the winter, so on and so forth. I tried to catch the manager a couple of times that week, and emailed as well, to tell her I would be moving. I never even saw her again - just had to leave the keys in the drop box because she was never in the office - not in the morning, the afternoon, never. I got one of the cleaners to check the place, and he… See More>

        Great Place for the Money.

Built in 1924, of course the building has its limitations. But if quiet, economical, safe housing is what you need - this is your place. Not trendy, flashy, or luxurious, just good solid housing. Buy a can of Black Flag or Raid to augment the monthly pest control service. NO major problems, but with people moving in and out it's only logical that there be an extra bug or two. Lots of Mercer students and retirees. Management is responsive and helpful.

            I like it here!

I have lived at the Massee since Feb 2009, and I enjoy it here. First, I like old buildings and this one is a gem. The rent is reasonable, and compared to other apartments in the same price range, the Massee is an excellent value. The management has been very responsive to any concerns I might have, usually taking care of maintenance issues the same day. The pest control people come monthly and the roaches are no worse than any other apartment complex I've lived in: if you keep your place clean, you won't have much of a problem (for those of you who have never lived in the South, it's the little brown roaches that are a sign of filth, and I've never seen one of those in my apartment. The occasional humongous, two-inch or longer ones are just a part of Southern living, especially in an older building). It's quiet, and as secure as a building can be in downtown Macon. I moved here because the neighborhood I was in had become unsafe, so that is an important factor for me. The location is near my work, church and grocery, so that's… See More>

              Im moving in Now

Im am going to be a new resident of the Massee as of Jan 15, 2010. When I approached the building, I thought it had a lot fo historical charm. The building was built in 1924, so you to consider that it has been standing for along time and still is going. I think the landlord, Charles, is a nice guy and does anything he can to make sure things are fixed and running properly and that drug dealers, and etc. people that dont need to be in the building stays out. Everywhere you go is going to have some problems here and there. But to live downtown for a reasonable price is good. I think I will enjoy living here and plan on being here for a long time.

                  Massee has Unique Character!!

I lived at the massee in 2002-2005 moved away and then moved back last month. Long term residents that i kept in touch with at the Massee told me about the new management and how they did not take care of the building. When they told me the old manager(Charles) was back from when I lived there previously I knew he would make the Massee a comfortable building to live in again. For all of those who left the Massee because of the buildings OLD CHARM. You probably should not have moved to the Massee in the first place. As for the crackheads they live at the Dempsey.

                    Consideration

You have to take into consideration that the Massee is a old unique building. If you move into a place and don't keep it up of course it is going to go down. There are some very nasty people that stays in places so if you are not a clean person you are going to draw pest. The downtown area period has a bad pest problem so it is not The Massee fault that the pest are coming into the building that's why they have free pest control that comes out every month and if you need them to spray extra speak up and they can arrange that. It's the people fault that they don't speak up about certain things, the female that is in the office now tries to do the best she can but she is not the manager and a lot of problems are out of her hands. The reason for no washer and dryers is because they were trying to better the laundry room by going with a new company that will take care of the maintenance of the machines. Would you rather have a room full of machines that don't work or a company that… See More>

                      Not for the inflexible

I lived at the Massee for only 6 months and was happy to move out. For starters, they charge you extra money per radiator in your apartment during the winter for heat- heat which was non-existent in my apartment! The two space heaters in a hall closet upon moving in should have clued me in, but there was no disclosure. I lived on the 8th floor and the elevator was broken way too many times- including when I was moving out! Now one of the maintenance guys they had there was awesome and really helped me out on my final day- but overall, they really did not take care of things as they came up. My roof leaked, the sinks and surfaces are nasty and there is a serious bug problem. I seldom had a problem with noise (but also run some fans in the apartment which may have drowned it out) but apparently the cops came to address some problems on my hall- the violators moved that week and were horribly inconsiderate (noisy, holding up the elevator, etc). More than once there was no water, and beware if you are showering as… See More>

                        pissed

this apartment complex is horrible. the management is young and vendictive. the airconditioners don't cool down the apartment. its august and we're miserable. we were promised new washers and dryers but its been months and we haven't heard anything. so we have to haul our clothes up and down the stairs because the elevator seldom works. the other tenents are creepy and whiney. the management tries to find things to evict you over. they are too harsh and drive away the tenents.there are no pets allowed so if you have a pet(like 80% of the population) you cannot live here. if you are a college student who likes to party, you cannot live here. they will evict you. if you have are in a wheelchair, you cannot live here. if you smoke i wouldn't recomend living here. the management is very young and spends its time in the lobby policing the building instead of working. they are NEVER there during office hours. often there is 2 or 3 people standing in the lobby waiting for them to get back. three bad reviews in the last month or so is proof the residents aren't happy here. you won't be either. even… See More>

Really bad. Bugs, loud college parties, and all the lead paint you can handle. The Management really needs to update the 50's and 60's ovens and refrigerators. And that Clothes Care Center they talk about is really about 6 washers and dryers that don't work, which they finally decided to replace except they took them out and now there are none. Its been two weeks and they don't care at all. Get ready to be pissed off if you move in here.

                            The Massee

I also lived at the Massee three times in the past 8 years. The Massee was built in 1918. Hello people !!! If you do not love the past then by all means don't live there. The building is one of the landmarks of Macon. My gosh I can't image how they make any money. The rents are low for downtown. I loved my time there. If I ever go back to Macon that will be my first stop. Where can you live in the world that is safe? Remember 9.11 ? We all must watch our backs and our neigbors backs. So I give the Massee the thumbs up. Enjoy the history then buy your dream home. I think they should show some of the unseen things that I found so delightful. Tour The Massee think about what Mr. Massee accomplished. That man had vision. Thanks for the chance to give my two cents. Cory

Roaches, lots of them....and other problems...

Yeah, roaches are everywhere and i should get over it. There, I said it for you. Let me tell you, I've lived in apartments all over the place. You aiin't never seen anything like this. I hear other residents (the few who aren't crazy hermits) talking about the problem as well. And management doies nothing. Every other apartment I've experienced, not even as "nice" as the massee, had some form of pest control come in and spray every few months. Not here. This is gross. Walk down a Massee hallway at night and the walls are alive with them. Every floor has a room by the elevator where you can dump your trash bags for collection. It's a roach super buffet. Trust me, this is a major problem here and the management couldn't care any less. I'm what you would call an insanely clean person. And I kill ten of those awful things a night.<br>What about the safety? Well, I've never felt unsafe in the parking lot. But I have felt unsafe in the elevator. It is known to fall from occassion. … See More>

                                Could be Charming.

First off, the Massee is a very quiet, high rise old building and yes, some of the people are quirky. The manager seems nice. The place could use an update, a lot of the appliances need updating. Maintenance responds, but they only give the problem a quick fix. It is also no secret that the walls are an inch thick with lead paint and there is probably asbestos hanging around in the walls. There is a fire station nearby and that is good, except when they wake you up in the mid of the night. There is no central heat/air that I know of in any apts and You also can not control the heat in the winter, it comes through a radiator and does not warm the place very well. The parking lot seems very unsafe and car robberies are often around here. Too bad no one seems to care.

However, the property is under new management and it's a different place. Unidentifiable smells; rude, invasive management; laundry facilities were ripped out months ago with only a prospective date as to when we might expect them again; No more pest control; no more pets allowed; rent increases...
