reasonable lofts in des moines.

My husband and I were looking to live in downtown des moines when we first moved in together. I did a lot of apartment hunting and eventually found the 10th Street Lofts. At first there was quite a bit of confusion about renting here and the lady that answered the phone the first time I called rudely told me that there were no apartments available and that there would not be any available for over a year, and then she hung up on me. It was a strange encounter, as I had grown accustomed to people being polite and answering whatever questions I had about rent and other things having to do with the apartment. My husband was insistent he wanted to live downtown and I was unable to find a decent well-priced lofts except for these and so I decided that I might try again. My second call was much more successful, the building manager (who was the woman that answered the first time too) strangely enough seemed to have some sort of wild personality change and she happily and politely answered all of my questions and set up an appointment to tour the apartments that following weekend. My husband and I showed up to meet her and she didn't arrive at the appointed time, eventually I called her after standing outside in the chilly weather and she insisted that I had never made such an appointment and that she had no idea who I was. This added my strange feelings about this particular landlord and I tried very hard to talk my husband out of this, but he insisted on setting up another appointment with the crazy woman. Eventually we did get a tour of the apartments, once we met the building manager it became clear to me that she is a very scatterbrained woman. She couldn't remember our names, or what apartments we wanted to look at, or where anything was it seemed. The apartments themselves were lovely and charming, we ended up renting the smallest apartment available - a 410 square foot studio. The high ceilings and large windows make the apartment classy and spacious, the black marble counter tops are excellent, and the tiled floor in our apartment is extremely lovely. I enjoy the feel of our apartment very much and would be renewing my lease if my husband had not been relocated to Seattle. The maintenance men are very friendly, helpful, and nice - they open doors for you and offer to help you carry your groceries to your building as well as remembering your name and even my cat's name! They're frequently on the premises cleaning, fixing things up, and making sure that everything looks excellent. The courtyard grass is always trimmed and never out of control, and I've never seen trash or garbage of any kind in the hallways or anywhere else on the premises. With the exception of the very scatterbrained manager (she is a nice woman, it seems - she just is a complete ditz, she never has any idea what is going on, she has called me twice to tell me I'm paying the wrong rent amount only to remember that, imagine that, I'm not!) and the noise this is an excellent place to live. The noise doesn't have so much to do with noisy neighbors as it does with sound carrying so well with the high walls and ceilings and no carpeting. I can hear people walking down the hallway, and when it rains a pipe that runs through my apartment makes a loud whooshing noise while I'm guessing water is running through it. Parking is not bad here at all, there is ALWAYS enough space to park and the lot is not all that far away, people that're bitching about it being half a block away need to get off their lazy fat asses and learn that walking is something you should do regularly. The parking lot could, however, do with a bit better lighting.
