Resident ā€¢ 2009 - 2011

11/12/2012

I lived here from August 2009 to July/August 2011. First off, this is a decent place to live. Notice I say decent (not great) because I currently live in an apartment in Windsor Heights and my current place is 10x nicer for pretty much the same price Duane and Steve are able to get away with not as nice for that price because of their location near Des Moines University and the fact that the medical students (like myself) fill their place up every year, only to realize later that it s not all it s cracked up to be and many move out after their first year there. While I was at Four Seasons, I lived in the 3005 building, which is the farthest back building in the complex (farthest north) that is newer and all 2-bedroom, 1 bathroom units. I m not sure about the other 3 buildings (I think they were a bit older and not quite as nice) but mine was a good place to live. The maintenance guys were really nice, and stuff was fixed fairly promptly. There s my pros on Four Seasons. However, the quality of the apartment and price of it aren t all that matter to me as a tenant CUSTOMER SERVICE and HONESTY count for something in my book as well. This is where Steve and Duane fall flat on their faces. I had a furnished unit my first year there (they furniture they supplied was really crappy, but it worked). Then my second year I was going to have a new roommate, and he had a decent amount of furniture that he was going to bring when he moved in with me in August. So I went in and talked to Steve in March or so and discussed with him the possibility of switching my current unit from being furnished to unfurnished. He said that would be fine, so we would be able to use our own furniture in the unit I currently occupied and I would not have to move units so I figured I was good to go NOPE. I went back to Steve in early July (so about 4 months after our original face-to-face conversation and about 1 month before our switch from furnished to unfurnished was supposed to happen) to get details on when him and his guys were going to move their furniture out of my apartment so we could get our own furniture moved in. All of a sudden, he somehow (and conveniently) forgot about our March conversation and said that we would either have to keep our furniture (and pay the extra rent money for it), remove the furniture ourselves (as well as find and pay for storage somewhere for it, even though they had plenty of storage at their facility), or move to a different apartment unit in the same building just because he couldn t change the furnished apartments around. What all this meant to me is that he promised me an easy transition from furnished to unfurnished as we had discussed in March, but when it came time to actually make it happen he either didn t want to deal with moving the furniture or Duane (the REAL boss here who makes the final decisions on things) wouldn t allow him to do it. So instead of just getting a new roommate with new furniture, I had to move from the 3rd floor to the 1st floor in the same building. And although that doesn t sound terrible, moving down two floors is almost the same as moving to an entire new apartment complex which is exactly what I wish I would have done at the time in retrospect. The way it was, I regrettably lived there with my new roommate for the next year and then we both jetted as soon as our lease was up the next summer. Like I already said, my new place is in Windsor Heights and I couldn t be happier with both the apartment and especially the managers (we haven t had even a single minor issue with them in our 15 months there). More PROS: - Did let us move out early to save month rent, but only after he had it filled by the people moving in after us (in other words he wasn t going to be losing any money in the early switch, so why would he care) - Location near DMU is nice; also within walking/biking distance to lots of nice restaurants and bars on Ingersoll Avenue; also fairly quick drive to downtown DM or West DM, whatever your destination is More CONS: - Blame minor fixes on the resident, also ticky-tacky charges (stuff due to normal wear and tear) after you move out that add up quickly and eat away your deposit so you don t get very much of it back; you would think after shoving us around the year before they would be nice about those charges, but that wasn t the case at all - Shower head with very low-flow installed partway through our time there that was done without our approval; we were told it was installed to save water and be nice to the environment, but they didn t offer recycling at the complex so nice to the environment was really just code for saving money on water (several changes while I lived there were blamed on something else but really just boiled down to saving Steve and Duane a dollar here or there) - Fiasco with the furnished/unfurnished switch and the totally unprofessional manner in which that situation was handled, which to me was why I moved out and why I decided to write a review on here so others are warned about their management skills (more like lack of management skills) One more thing: if you look at the reviews for this place, you'll notice that they're all over the place with low ratings and high ones. I'm not accusing management of submitting their own ratings in order to make their place look and sound better than it actually is, but I have the suspicion that's what's happening. If that is true, it kind of shows what these guys are like.
