Resident 2003 - 2009

6/2/2010

I went to Drake and then DMU, lived here for several years. The rent is a decent price. However, after we got cats (and we paid the rent and deposit) we seemed to have trouble with the management. My cats did not damage the apartment, other than chewing through the $5 mini blinds, and we always kept their litter box clean. We had a few instances of cockroaches, but as soon as they were reported they were dealt with. The people in the office were fine to deal with, but the main reason we left was the onsite management was snippy and asked me if I even knew what cockroaches looked like, and then told me my cereal needed to be stored in plastic containers instead of the cereal boxes they came in because that will attract roaches. We had to tandem park and if we left the car outside the tandem spot for 5 minutes to run up and get the keys there would be a sticker on it that was impossible to get off. Parking here is atrocious, there are a very limited number of guest spots, and is almost impossible to find one Thursday through Sunday. The laundry room on the east side is decent, but is very busy on Sunday nights. The one of the west side has an interesting aroma. There is no deck. I did not have a dishwasher, and in hindsite it would have been worth the extra $35/mo. If it was really quiet at night, I could hear my downstairs neighbors talking, and my next door neighbor snoring. The apartment building to the west at the time was sketchy, I didn't have any trouble, but the students that had windows facing them would run into trouble with noise, especially in the summer. The police were there often. They were very stingy with the damage deposit, charging us to "reclean" things in the kitchen and bathroom(when I know for a fact they tore everything out of the kitchen to remodel it). I was told by other people to take them to small claims court, but I was a busy medical student that wasn't in town the vast majority of time. The 2 ACs, one in the master and one in the living room did not keep up with the heat on the 3rd floor, and were a gigantic increase to our electric bill. I moved out to a beautiful place in West Des Moines, and while we do pay a lot more in rent we have tons more amenities and are very happy despite the 2 major floods we've had this year. I'd say if you are budget conscious and a DMU student, this may be for you, but otherwise I'd keep looking. For an extra $100/mo. you can have the sun, moon, and stars.
