Resident 2010

Grinnell Estates

Fairmont Management Company, I believe that's the name of the business that owns the property. I couldn't find this apartment on HUD's list of low rent apartments for disabled and/or elderly. The paper work required to apply for residency is exhausting, and often has to be redone if a form is missed or filled out incorrectly. Come prepared with every bit of documentation regarding your finances, bank info, previous addresses, doctor orders, etc. They can't deny you a pet, but can place a size and weight limit. They do demand a rather high, and non-refundable pet deposit; which is based on the market value rent. My deposit was $410 for my pet, and $410 for my apartment. They did allow payments. I think the deposits should still be based on the amount of your rent, not the market value though. It's an extreme financial burden, and unfair; in my opinion. A doctor's prescription for a pet is worth obtaining. It's just like getting a prescription for medicine. There has been enough medical proofs now that pets help improve mental health that affects the physical health too. Grinnell Estates is all one level. There is an outside door and an inner hallway door. So you don't have to go outside in adverse weather to do laundry. There are two washers and two dryers. One washer is a commercial one, so it can do bigger loads than the regular sized washers. The cost is $1 per load, and you get your dryer's worth too. Both take about 40-45 min wash and dry. There's no problem with waiting for one to be free, we all seem to have our laundry day preferences that doesn't affect us. Tuesday mornings are for residents who have assistants that come in to do their laundry and cleaning, this is reserved for them so they can complete their jobs. It all works out well. There are two bedroom and one bedroom apartments, however, HUD has made a rule that a single person cannot rent a two bedroom apartment. The apartments are very small. The one bedrooms are just barely 700 sq ft, or about 720'. I highly recommend that if you're coming from a place bigger than 900 sq', that you seriously trim down what to move and what to sell at a garage sale. I came from a 3 bedroom house, 1260 sq ft. I trimmed down, and still had to trim down twice more before I was able to fit everything in with room to spare. There are lots of closet spaces though, well worth losing living room space for sure. There are NO amenities, no ice makers in the frig freezers, no garbage disposal, no dishwashers, no pools, not even a hot tub. (which would be highly useful with a building full of arthritic residents.) The mailboxes are all inside, and by the manager's office. We have a common room where we meet everyday almost for coffee, morning and afternoon. There are programs available for those who are interested, like yoga, bingo, card & board games, crafts, etc. There is a kitchen just off from the common room. We celebrate residents birthdays each month and serve a lunch or dinner with a birthday cake. We sort recyclable items in the dumpster area. The location is right off the main artery into town. Plenty of parking available, and there is a People Rides that will do scheduled pickups, or regular drop offs and pickups around town for a reasonable price. They will even take you to places in other towns close by like Montezuma, Newton and Marshalltown. It's available everyday Monday through Friday for scheduled rides. However, only picks up and drops off to Walmart and HyVee M-W-F at scheduled times. There is a taxi business in town, but I would recommend only using it in a pinch because of the cost. It doesn't run on weekends either. HyVee Pharmacy will deliver medication RX's. I don't know about the other pharmacies in town. The facilities have some issues of disrepair. However, money is being spent to update things like replacing windows and doors, new refrigerators and stoves too. There is a maintenance personnel on staff, but only part-time. However, he is a very knowledgeable and cordial fellow, knows his business and is prompt in taking care of repair needs, as well as hanging a swag lamp, changing a light bulb, or resetting a curtain rod. He has a very conscientious work ethic, and even loves our pets like we do. They hire the grounds kept by a local business, but it needs improvement. They tend to get a sloppy when it's 4pm on a Friday afternoon. They don't trim the bushes, nor do they clean up brush, pine cones laying around, and have to be told to wack the weeds more often than not, and they often forget to blow the grass off the walks and patios. I think they need to find another business to take care of the grounds and lawn. This is why I have set the safety level at 3. The manager of this apartment building is also very friendly, helpful and truly has sincere concern for the resident's welfare; making sure that we are safe from crime (which is almost nil), and makes sure that there is nothing on the grounds that could harm us. Being a elderly and disabled apartment complex, there are concerns of falls on ice, or tripping on cracks in the walks, etc. The owners came this past early fall and identified places that needed fixed to assure our safety. Like all places, there are some issues that are annoying, like the replacement of the windows that were to be done before winter. However, the work didn't get started until December, just as we approached the first winter storm of the year. I can safely say that we all would prefer that they hold off from replacing any more now until spring. Since moving back to Iowa from a large city, I had concerns living in Grinnell. I have been surprisingly content living here for the past 8 months. Restaurants are a little expensive, but the manager of the Grinnell Estates' is serious about keeping good residents living here to assure that we are safe and happy to the best of her ability. I resigned my contract for 2011 ahead of time, because I am quite content here...........now.........if we could just influence the owners to put in a hot tub!!
