Be warned, the reviews are true!

We tried to move into this apartment complex back in in 2007. We were shown one of the two-story townhouses, not the one that we were going to move into (as this one was not ready to be shown) but one that was well maintained and well-decorated by its occupier. We were assured that the unit we were moving into was in excellent condition, had not been smoked in, and was being given a fresh coat of paint and having its carpet professionally cleaned. On the day that my wife and I arrived to move in (with several trucks full of our stuff), the first problem we had was that the office didn't even have the key for us. It got worse! The prior tenant had left their broke down car parked in front of the unit's garage, and the property manager would not have it towed! We finally got into the unit once the prior tenant dragged her butt to the office to give us the key. Not only had the unit been smoked in, the prior had been a chain smoker. The walls and ceiling (which were supposed to be newly painted we were assured) were yellow with cigarette smoke. The carpets were stained black with mold/mildew from neglect and what appeared to be spills from multiple fish tanks, not to mention the 50 burns throughout the apartment. The carpets (which needed replacement at this point) had at best been gone over with a rug doctor. There were holes punched into the walls and doors. The floors were filthy in the kitchen and bathrooms. Mouse droppings were all over the apartment. Then there was the mold! The bathroom upstairs had leaked water down through the floor into the water heater/furnace closet in the lower bathroom. We opened the door to discover an unlivable amount of mold. It covered everything! And it was deep into the walls, not just surface mold. There was water damage everywhere! The response from management was to blame their maintenance staff, telling us that they'd have the carpets cleaned and would put this special paint over the moldy walls which would kill the mold. Not good enough, as the mold was in the walls, which the paint wouldn't touch. We called the city of Marion, but they wouldn't do anything unless we took possession. We couldn't even breathe in the apartment it smelled so bad! It made us physically ill to be in the apartment. I returned the key, got my first month's rent check back from them and was assured they would return my deposit in due time. They didn't, of course, saying (several months later) that I had broken our lease (which I couldn't do since I never took possession, their rules not mine) and this was the fee.
