Verified Resident 2009 - 2019

Over the last couple years, under the Aventine management, we have had a number of issues that have lead us to wanting to leave this apartment complex. The experience has left us feeling unwanted and disrespected and having a distasteful view of the company. From the absolute filthy nature of the garbage dump, where the compactor is frequently overflowing and broken, with insects and vermin infesting it, to the incredible lack of accountability held against owners who let their dogs defecate wherever they want without cleaning it up. It has made this apartment complex disgusting and rancid. The staff themselves have been rude to us on a number of occasions and it appears that they have a high turnover rate. We see new staff up there every few weeks, so it would seem that it's not a good place to work either. However, of the many problems we have had with the poor attitude of the staff, one of the most egregious incidents was when we received an email stating that they did not receive our rent and if they didn't receive it in in the next 10 days we would be evicted within a month. We had paid our bill on time, but they had lost our check. Upon calling them, they were incredibly rude and made us feel disrespected. They later, while still on the phone with us, found the check and told us it was their mistake and they will resubmit it and not to worry that they were not going to be charging us a late fee, as if it was still OUR mistake that THEY lost our check in the first place and like THEY were doing us favor. We have also had a problem with a seeming spike of criminal behavior in the neighborhood. On the digest that is sent out, there are several people complaining of neighbors smoking marijuana and doing drugs and incidents of people's cars getting broken into and packages getting stolen. There were also reports of gang fights at the pool which ended in the police being called and later to find out that none of the people in the fight were even residents. We have reached a point where we honestly just don't feel safe living here anymore. Finally, the straw that really broke the camel's back was when we were almost forced out of our apartment due to renovations. We received an email that our apartment was going to be renovated and they would not be renewing our lease when it was up. The email stated there may be options to stay at the complex and to see the manager. I spoke with the manager and he said that our options were to either A) pack up our entire apartment and put ALL of our belongings in a garage they would let us use for free or rent a POD and find somewhere to stay for a three weeks and then move back in with $200 markup, B) find another apartment to live within the apartment complex IF something happened to turn up, or C) go live somewhere else. If a renovated apartment would become available before our lease ends we could move into that one at a lower increase than $200. He said we need to pack everything because we would only have 30 days to move. We did just that. We packed our entire apartment and were planning on staying at the complex. While we were trying to figure out our finances and living situation a few weeks later, we had gone up to the office to talk to Dan and inquire about more details of our lease and how much time we would have, it turns out Dan quit and the girl at the desk informed us they had stopped the renovation of the apartments and had failed to tell us. I asked where my email was and she said since our lease wasn't up until December she figured we would come to the office if we had questions. Here we were, thinking we were being forced out of our apartment, being forced to pay for moving expenses and possibly take time off of work, and completely uplift our lives because these people didn't have the courtesy to send us an email stating that it was no longer going to happen. Imagine our outrage at the dishonesty and the negligence being thrust upon us as we are trying to make ends meet! We have lived in this apartment faithfully for 10 years, to be treated like the garbage left up at the dump. It was truly despicable and made us come to the conclusion that we deserved to live somewhere where we feel safe and appreciated and with people who will be honest with us and protect us as tenants. We will absolutely be moving to a new apartment complex and will not be referring anyone to sign a lease with you. We would never wish this same situation on anyone.

Thank you for your thorough review, though I'm sorry to see you haven't been fully satisfied here at The Aventine. We tried to look into your account history, but couldn't find anything conclusive. We'd be happy to talk with you, get more details, and work to make things better. Regarding the trash issue, we are working with the company who picks up the trash and recycling to find the best solution to the problem. We acknowledge the problem and know that any vendors we choose ultimately reflect back on us. Most often the compactor is not broken or full, but residents don't understand how to use it. We recently replaced the door to the compactor so it's easier to use. We're also looking to see what other steps we can take to eliminate this frustration, or educate residents on proper use. I can't speak on what previous managers may or may not have done, but I can assure you that the current manager, Maria, is more than happy to schedule time to talk with you and go over any issues you may have had in the past. Maria posted on Active Building two months ago about renovations stopping, and has also posted several times about being in contact with the Aurora Police Department. The safety and security of our residents is top priority, and we trust our residents to adhere to the adage "if you see something, say something" when the office is closed. We are happy to work with local police, but if anything happens off hours we can't be expected to know about it unless residents file a report. Again, I am very sorry for any past frustrations you've been put through. If you do choose to move out at the end of your lease we will completely honor that, but regardless of if you choose to stay or not we want to do what we can to make the rest of your time with us as pleasant as possible. Please feel free to stop by the office, give us a call at 630-236-8200, or email us at residenthelp@jvmrealty.com.
