I moved to Illinois and started graduate school at SIU last fall, and I was slightly hesitant about moving to The Quads because of some of these negative reviews. However, after living here for two semesters (and re-signing my lease), I am still confused about what's the problem. Sure, the place isn't perfect--what affordable apartment complex is?--and I still don't love the parking lot and the four flights of stairs I climb, but overall the place is awesome: affordable rent, close to campus, excellent management (any complaints about the manager are absurd; she has always been exceedingly helpful despite really not knowing me at all), huge rooms, quiet and friendly neighbors, safe, and a great maintenance staff. After living in Carbondale for two semesters, I fail to see an apartment complex that surpasses The Quads in terms of room size, quietness, price, and management. I have several friends who have had tons of problems with several of the other complexes in town--i.e. noise, robbery, parking/towing, etc.--and I haven't had any at all. Essentially, if you're on the fence about the Quads like I was last year, I would recommend this apartment to anyone and I am very happy to have resigned my lease. I'm still perplexed by some of these reviews, particularly the ones about the carpets in the hallways not being cleaned because I see the staff cleaning them all of the time. Also, the few negative comments about the manager seem extremely personal and not at all warranted, but I'm not certain of those details.
