Resident 1999 - 2000

5/20/2003

408 East Green

I lived in this apartment my senior year at UIUC, and I was not impressed. Although, in retrospect, it seemed perfect for one of those first apartment horror stories--I can only go up from here, The rooms were ridiculously small, especially mine. The room was the size of about two refrigerator boxes--meaning I could sit on my twin sized bed and reach everything in my room (the closet, dresser, window, and bedroom door). Speaking of window--my room was closest to the front door of our apartment, and it had a window that opened onto the common hallway. Strange. The furniture in the furnished apartment was adequate, to say the very best. The living room set (chair, sofa, end tables, and coffee table) were covered in cigarette burns, paint, holes, scratches, etc. There was a desk provided for each room, but, as there was barely any room in my bedroom for me, let alone additional furniture, we had to move it into the living room (which caused major crowding issues). The beds were terribly uncomfortable, and I have a scar on each arm from the metal frame. The office staff was obnoxious at best. They held onto a package of mine for the longest time; I had to wait for someone to actually show up in the office before I could get it. They charged us for a missing ceiling lamp shade, that was missing when we moved in, as well as for a new door (despite the fact that we had reported it had a hole when we moved in). Moving in day, they were still "cleaning" the apartment at the appointed moving in time, sending my roommate and I to Meijer, with fully-loaded cars, to kill some time. When we finally got in, the carpet was still wet, and we noticed it turned our bare feet black for the first few months. Parking, thats a joke! We had to park two blocks away off of Springfield, in a communal Bankier lot. My roommate had a spot in the lot, but my spot was in a driveway off of the lot, next to another apartment building. I was frequently blocked in by residents of that building, as well as Bankier staff. I could at least have the other residents towed, Bankier always ignored my frustrations when they blocked me in, telling me I would have to wait until their cleaning crew was finished. Oh yeah, my front license plate was also stolen while parked there. The laundry room was terribly overcrowded with machines, and despite their number, the machines rarely worked. Washers would stop with water still in them, dryers would only shoot out cold air. It became cheaper, and easier, to drive the 85 miles to my parents´ house in Springfield and do the wash there. I had a good time that year in the apartment, though, and what else can you expect 4 blocks from the Quad. Good luck!
