Resident 2004 - 2005

3/19/2009

Shady management, shoddy construction

I lived at Highland Place during the 2004-2005 school year. The apartment was very nice...nice vaulted ceilings, large rooms and a big walk-in closet in one bedroom. There was also a nice big balcony with additional storage off of it. Washer and dryer are included in the unit. We paid $425 for a 2 bedroom, 1000 sq. ft. unit. However, that's where the good ends. Midway through the year, the (wire) shelf in my closet collapsed and I ended up stepping on broken glass. Granted, I probably had too much weight on it, but we used the same shelving at a restaurant I worked at and put much more weight on those. We just used more reinforcement there. It took maintenance over a week to come fix it, so I had to store all of my clothes in my roommate's walk-in. Moving on...the carpet started to come away from the door frames and wrinkle in the hallway. Maintenance even came over to inspect it since it was apparently a problem in several units. When we were moved out, we were charged for damage to the carpet due to our pets (dog and cat). Um no, the damage was caused because it wasn't installed correctly. They also charged us to replace the toilet seat and the oven door (oven door?!?!?). We ended up losing our entire ($100) deposit as well as part of my roommate's pet deposit because of these bogus charges. In fact, the manager left the community right after we moved out, so I have a feeling she was just trying to make a buck off of us. From the reviews on here, it doesn't sound like the current management is any better (and probably worse...we didn't have any mold issues when I was there). Also, the walls are very thin and the doors, while nice-looking, are made of very flimsy wood. Our neighbors were also very loud (a mom and several teenagers) and they would climb in and out of the apartment windows instead of using the door. Nice-ish apartments, but you definitely get what you pay for.
