Resident 2018 - 2019

4/29/2020

The apartment itself was okay, but several issues with the landlord made this a frustrating experience. As for the apartment, I stayed on the 2nd floor (above the basement unit). Price seemed a couple hundred below average for the size and location. The wood floor and trim looked great, as does the bathroom. Living room is huge and there is a small annex that could serve as an office, but the master bedroom is compact and the 2nd bedroom even smaller. The appliances were okay- dishwasher broke but eventually was fixed. Noise was minimal. It was very hard to keep it warm during the winter- cold air could be felt rushing in around the doors and windows. The landlord struggled to be organized with simple matters like sorting out locks and keys and keeping track of amounts and dates, and was unhelpful when we tried to work with her to resolve these issues. - Our names were spelled incorrectly on the lease, so we informed her of the correct spelling. When we received our checks for the deposit refund, the names on the checks had the same incorrect spelling as before, so we had to wait for her to get new checks to get our money back. - We paid 1.5 month's rent for our security deposit, but the deposit refund checks were for only one month's rent; we had to show her the lease stating the deposit amount was indeed 1.5 months (not sure if this was confusion or intentional). - We were not provided keys to one of the locks on the back door of the building and one on the front door of the building with the explanation that she couldn't find the keys for one lock and didn't have extra copies of the key for the other lock. On two occasions, the landlord exited the building and locked all the locks behind her, trapping us out of our apartment. She refused to admit this and claimed we locked ourselves out, but eventually removed one of the locks to prevent this from occurring. - Our yearlong lease began in mid-July. She told the people who were going to move in after us that they could move in on July 1. At some point, she realized there was an overlap of a couple weeks. Luckily, the unit below was unoccupied, but the new people had to move all their stuff into that unit, only to pack and move it all over again two weeks later. - When my roommate moved out, the landlord wasn't available for him to return the keys, so he left them in the unit and locked the door behind him. She told us she was locked out because she did not have her own copy of the keys to the apartment. - I asked if we could use email to correspond better during the moving out phase. She said she didn't have an email. I requested she create a free email account to ease communication and she refused. Communicating with her by phone or text was ineffective, so I had to make multiple hour-long round trips from my new apartment in order to talk to her in person regarding the bungled deposit refund checks, etc.
