Resident ā€¢ 2007

12/9/2007

I saw a lot of seriously alarming posts about this place, so I was very nervous about my wife renting a little studio apartment in order to attend school while I try to find a job to relocate me to Chicago from Colorado to be with her. But we've been pleasantly surprised. This was a sight-unseen renting process for us, but the staff was very helpful and understanding, emailing pictures to us and making sure that the day we arrived we could sign the paperwork and move in right away. I was especially impressed that the staff was on a first name basis with everyone we saw them interact with - very friendly, and it appeared to us like there were a lot of long-time residents. The doormen are very friendly and helpful, and give me the piece of mind that my wife is safe while we're geographically separated. The building used to be an old hotel, and thus my wife likes the old character of the building. But that also means that if you're looking for a shiny, new place, this is not it. Not that we've had any issues with the building, just don't expect this to look like a Grand Hyatt on the inside. You can tell the building has history, which can be a plus or a minus depending on your personal taste. She has not had any maintenance issues, so we can't speak for how responsive maintenance is. The only major annoyance to my wife is that the intersection of Foster and Sheridan is a major CTA bus hub. Which is a plus if you need to take the bus anywhere, but the drawback is that her windows face that direction and there is a lot of traffic noise if she has the window open or has a window A/C unit in. When we took the A/C out of the window as winter approached, the noise was no longer an issue. But given how hot Chicago can get in the summer, leaving the windows closed makes for a very warm apartment. As far as neighbors, it's very very quiet. We never hear anything, which struck me as very odd, since normally in apartment you at least hear SOMETHING every now and then, but the building itself seems very solid since we never hear anything from inside the apartment. If we're in the hallway we might hear a TV or something, but that's about it. The major drawback some people may have is parking. There is only on-street parking, and there are a lot of residential buildings in the neighborhood. So if you have a car, you can expect to be walking several blocks to get back to your apartment unless you get lucky. For my wife, she didn't bother to bring a car, since the train is about 3 blocks away and as I mentioned before there is a major bus hub right in front of the building. My wife prefers to take the train, and has said she has no problem walking to/from the train station from a safety perspective. So to wrap this up, other than traffic noise if your windows face Sherdian and the parking situation, my wife has really enjoyed living here. She's been there for six months and has another 6-months left in her lease. If I'm not able to get a good job that can relocate me there by then (and thus we'll get a larger place together), she will likely renew the lease.
