Resident 2007 - 2009

3/15/2009

This is an attempt at an impartial review. The good, the bad and the ugly, so to speak. To add some context, I'm a single guy (which means single income) with no pets living in one of the larger one-bedrooms units and have been here for a couple of years. First, the Good... - Prices are reasonable. Some may think they're a slight bit on the high side but I've found that the rent here is reasonable. - The floor plans are very generous - especially the corner units with bay windows. There's a lot of space in the living room and kitchen (too much? ha ha). - Most units have a lake view. If you're on the 5th floor or higher, you can see the lake and the morning sunrise is quite impressive. - In the summer, you can rent AC units. This might seem weird at first but you can actually rent an AC window unit from management during the summer and they promptly remove it when it gets colder out. This means you don't have an unsightly AC in your living room window all year. - Pergo floors. Easy to clean! Enough said! - Gas ranges in the kitchen. These days, it's all about the electric range but with Wyndham, you're cooking with gas - literally. - Management is courteous. The management is quite polite and courteous although one person is quite detached (you can tell she's none too happy about her job). That happens and you can't blame the management team for that. OK, the Bad... - The building is very OLD. Some might like this but I'm personally not a fan. I thought I'd like it but no. - The paint job inside the units are terrible. Much like all older buildings, the cupboards and doors have so much paint on them, they don't even close all the way. The right thing to do would be strip the old paint and apply a new coat. That's not what happened. - The bedrooms have no sunlight and no privacy. The building is shaped like a 'U' and so your bedroom looks like it faces an alley and you can clearly see into your neighbors units. This means you're much less likely to open the blinds. - There's NO DISHWASHER! This is big. The unit I'm in has NO DISHWASHER! I really wish I had caught that before moving in. - The ceiling fans are noisy. It's nice to have a fan but when it's so loud that you can't sleep, that's a problem. Management has made a few attempts to fix it but it always seems to come back. - Weak shower. Again, enough said! - There's no garbage chute. You have to simply place your garbage in a large trashcan that fills up very quickly. The garbage room sometimes has a ton of garbage. - The service elevator is unpleasant. Considering the service elevator is used to empty the trash rooms, it's often times filthy. Good thing you don't use it often unless you have a pet. - Parking is a hassle. I've been on the waiting list for a parking spot for months now with no end in sight. Street parking isn't exactly very easy to get and most times, I find myself parking five or six blocks away (good exercise, I guess). - Bugs!! I've seen bugs (yeah, the gross kind. Sorry.) in the lobby and stairwells. Not cool. It's not a very usual thing but just when you think they're gone, you see another one. Finally, the Ugly... - The building's age is showing. This one's tough since it can be charming in a way. The lobby is pretty grand at first glance and can really draw you in but as you start noticing the little things, you can see it's age and stages of dis-repair. - Modern clashes with classic. Obviously, safety is important and there are security cameras all around but they could have blended it into the building better. - The units have large sliding mirrors in the living room. Looks gaudy and is unnecessary since the living rooms are large anyway. They could have gone with something more elegant. - The heat can be overwhelming. In the winter, there's steam heating throughout the apartment. It can be quite overwhelming but it's much better than freezing! For those who like it hot and humid, this one's a positive. And there you have it.
