Resident • 2008 Not Recommended
Woodridge, commonly referred to as "Hoodridge", is not the safest option for college students. I moved in this summer (2008) and immediately regretted the decision. As seen in the Pantagraph, shootings and break-ins do occur here. Since I've been here a young man was shot, two rival gang members lived (or still live?) in the townhomes, four armed men broke into an occupied townhome, and the sound of gunshots and screaming could be heard. Gang members would hang around the dumpster late at night. For now the violence seems to have calmed down, it is much worse in the summer. There are solicitors..so don't answer your door if you're not expecting anyone. The exterminators and such come by without notice..which is kind of freaky since.. well.. I'm in constant fear that someone is going to break in due to the past events that have taken place in this neighborhood. I don't want to scare anyone off, it is a really nice place, but I don't recommend this place to young college students (especially if they may be in the townhome alone from time to time). Make sure someone is with you at all times. Do not walk outside alone. Keep your bikes inside. Try to install alarm systems and doorbells if you can. You won't be able to hear knocking 1/2 the time and you will be freaked out when you hear noise downstairs...only to find out it's just an exterminator or repair man that made an appointment without your knowledge. You can call the police if you think something suspicious is going on....but they may get there 45 minutes later (which did happen after a gun shot was heard). Also, you can call the police for hearing strange pounding/shattering noises outside..but they'll only check the front yards and not the back where the destruction actually occurred. All in all...I like the appearance and home-like feel of the townhomes...but I fear for my safety 24/7. We need more street lights, cameras, and police protection. It would also be nice if animals were allowed to help us feel more secure.
