Resident 2013 - 2014

3/20/2014

Prior to actually moving into Copper Beech, I was very excited. The town homes are very spacious, and the complex offers many amenities (i.e., pool/fitness/tanning, on-site maintenance, etcetera). However it was very clear after moving in that you do not receive what you are promised, especially considering the price that you pay. First and foremost, signing with Greenville Utilities is a hassle and a pain. The inexperienced students at the desk that are there to help residents gave myself and my roommates faulty information that resulted in us not being able to make an account by the deadline. We were told the charges that accumulated during this time would be taken care of since it wasn't our fault. We were surprised to find out a couple months later that they were waiting for payment on said charges. utilities are also a hassle because the responsibility ultimately falls on one roommate -- it affects one roommate's credit score, so if the other roommates don't have the money that month or refuse to py it for whatever reason, you are SCREWED. This screwed me over multiple times over the course of my stay. There is also no locks on individual bedroom doors -- at least, not ones without a key. You can lock it from the inside, but if you lock your door and shut it on the outside, just make sure you have a hair pin handy or something. I only bring this up because if you have issues from roommates, your personal items are not protected. Maintenance is also an issue when it comes to your personal items, safety and privacy. On-site maintenance is a joke. Right upon moving in, I noticed that my toilet ran. I called straight away and it took them a month to come fix it. Three hours later, it began running again, and it took them ANOTHER month to come fix it. This happened once more before the third and final "fix" I just had my dad come fix it. Considering you pay for utilities, the lack of "complimentary" service can come out of your pocket. Maintenance also has no respect for boundaries. Since you never know when they are coming, they knock twice before entering, since they have master keys. This means maintenance has full access to your apartment even if no residents are present. I personally haven't had any theft issues, but a friend of mine that lives in Copper had her home robbed over Christmas break and it's very possible that it was due to maintenance since they have that access. The maintenance of the apartment complex itself is disgusting. The "backyard" space is constantly flooded with trash and cigarette butts, and since there is no enforced policy regarding picking up after your dog, there is commonly poo piles everywhere you go. It's disgusting. I will say that the pool/fitness/tanning center is a nice, well-kept touch (except for the tanning -- most of the light bulbs are out), but there is a large "activity" fee that accompanies your lease. In addition to, the "redecoration" fee you pay is a joke. When we moved in, the carpets were gross, and the futon was very obviously not cleaned prior to us moving in. The furniture was also in poor shape and the tables and counters were sticky. The carpet is so sensitive to dirt and spills that no matter how often you vacuum, they are always going to look like you haven't cleaned in weeks. Copper Beech is a very expensive place to live. The town homes are spacious, but NOT WORTH IT.
