Resident 2005 - 2008

6/17/2009

The good, the bad, and the ugly.

THE GOOD: The cabinets, carpets, countertops and appliances were new and very tasteful (also, every apartment includes ice maker, microwave, washer/dryer and alarm system). Other reviewers said the place was drafty, but I (seriously) never turned on the heater the whole time I lived there, because it was a 2nd floor middle apt. with southern exposure--very toasty. I also liked the french doors and my balcony which overlooked a large spring-fed lake (the ducks were sooo cute!). The style of the place was really nice and it is centrally located with easy access to downtown and the north-side. THE BAD: Sooo loud! The interstate, the carwash next door, the 3am trash truck at the Burger King, the drag racing on Shadeland...they say you get used to it, but I never did. After the first year the sprinklers broke and never got fixed so the grass died, got replanted and died again. Also, very high rent for the size and location. THE UGLY: Ok, this change of management thing got really ridiculous, hopefully it's better now--but by the time I left they had people in there who I swore spent their days thinking up ways to screw over residents, "Gee, let's not empty the trash compactor often enough and then charge people $50 for every bag left by the wayside." They graciously provided a stick with a sign saying "Push trash to the back of the shoot(spellcheck please, the word is 'chute')" I ask you, if they have enough time to dig through trash bags looking for ID, wouldn't you think they'd have the time to push the trash to the back of the "shoot" themselves? They also decided to troll the parking lot looking for expired license plates. I got a 24 hour tow notice on a Friday night! Which gave me all kinds of time to get to the BMV. But the biggest stab in the back happened after I moved out. I'm a neat freak, which means I left that apartment detailed to the 'inth. I also thought they'd appreciate the patio door screens I'd installed (which are still there). Instead, I get a bill for $300! They claimed everything was filthy...filthy tub($50), filthy fridge ($75), greasy carpet stains ($50), filthy cabinets ($50)..they even charged me for a filthy pantry and my apartment didn't even have a pantry! At first I thought it was a joke or they had the wrong apartment, nope! I got a $90 charge for nail holes. They said, "Well, yeah the lease says you can have nail holes but yours were big." WTH? I took pictures of their "filthy" hallways and grounds and told them that in retaliation for having to see my name in writing with the word "filthy" next to it, they would have to take me to court or get that $300 out of my cold, dead hands. And for 6 months they hounded me until one day I got a phone call and this woman asks,"Are you going to pay this bill or are we going to have to take you to court?" and I said, "I guess you're going to have to take me to court." The next day I got a letter saying that after 'careful review' they decided that yes, I was right the apartment was not "filthy" and I could disregard the bill. So that's how they treated a resident who paid rent on time for three years and took care of the place like she owned it.
