Resident 2016

Living in IUPUI's Riverwalk Apartments as a college freshman might legitimately be the biggest mistake I will ever make in my college career. To start off, the apartments are not cleaned before you move in. The apartment had several damages to appliances and furniture upon move in, despite the fact that I and all four of my roommates were each paying approximately $1000 per month to live there. The apartments are also small considering what we were paying. Considering the area at the time, we were being charged about 4 times as much as the apartment was worth by campus housing. About a month into living there we found out that we had been living with bed bugs in the apartment as well, and IUPUI's housing staff did not do their jobs in full in order to help us. One of my roommates eventually had to go to a student advocacy group on campus in order to get help with the bed bugs we had in our room upon move in because the housing staff refused to help us with our apartment, despite the fact that the bed bugs had likely been in our apartment before we even moved in. Believe it or not, that is not the only issue we had when living in IUPUI's housing during that year. One of my roommate's got caught drinking by one of the RA's in out apartment, despite the fact that he was of legal age to do so. I caught the RA lying to his supervisors and making the situation seem much worse than it actually was. I reported the RA in question to his supervisors for lying to them and treating residents of campus housing without a very basic level of dignity and respect. Instead of disciplining the RA, the supervisors came after me. They told me that because I knew that the situation was happening to begin with that I had been "passively participating" in it. This is obviously absurd because I told them that one of their employees had been lying to them directly and treating other students extremely poorly and instead of handling the situation with their employee they ended up punishing me for standing up for my roommate and close friend. I ended up having several meetings with the supervisors in order to clear the situation up, and the one thing that became immensely clear is that each and every supervisor and RA there is not qualified for their jobs or even qualified for any job that requires any level of professionalism. I would not trust these people to manage a McDonalds, let alone an apartment complex that houses college students. If I could give IUPUI's Campus housing 0 Stars I would. We were paying $4000 a month to live there, and I believe that we deserved to be treated with respect as opposed to being mistreated as we were.
