Resident 2011 - 2013

8/1/2013

I have lived at Oak Lake for 2 years now, and although I have not experienced some of the things as others, I will not negate their experience but will instead tell my own. I have not had any problem with office staff, w/JC Hart or LT Management. I've not had anyone speak to me rudely or been disrespectful. Maintenance was much better.. After the maintenance supervisor, Tim, passed away (RIP) the ones who are there to pick up the slack don't quite compare. Hopefully, that will get better. I like that they keep the geese police coming out every week. When I first moved in w/JC Hart, the geese and all their droppings were EVERYWHERE. It was impossible to walk from your car to your door w/out feeling like an obstable course trying not to step on the crap!! Now, there is no worry of that-- the crazy geese aren't there attacking people or their pets, nor are they leaving their disgusting waste all over the place. It makes a lot better area to walk around the complex. What I don't like is the exterminator. What kind of exterminator does not get rid of spider nests?? Perhaps this is so they can have a reason to keep coming back. It's never obvious that they sprayed because the bugs are ridiculous. I would love to go the summer without looking up and seeing a silverfish or spider crawling on my wall-- sucks even more that they always seen to be in the bedroom!!!! When I first moved in, the rent was reasonable. Now, I think it's gotten a bit much.. but perhaps that was because when I originally signed, there was a bit of a discount for a 15 mo lease. It also sucks that there are no discounts given. But the quality of the apt is worth what I was originally paying. It's increased $20 since then, but if it goes up any further than that it won't be efficiently priced. Yea, the stainless steel appliances look nice, but they don't do anything different than the others. I would've rather kept my rent as it was. Another better option would be to get the carpets done when renewing. Parking is a headache now, and paid carports need to be better regulated. There is really nothing you can do when someone ELSE parks in your carport when you're paying for it every month. There is no respect for the resident's that need to park, and people seem to have an issue telling their guests (esp ones that will be around long term/spending the night) to park in the spaces farther back from the apt. There really needs to be assigned spaces done. What is the purpose of having a policeman living in the complex when there is not even any available contact for him? He should be handing out tickets or noise violations... and I'm sure he's getting a discount on his rent. The quality of people has gone down. Before, you could tell that it was a working community... now you may be awaken by arguing in the middle of the night, or young people talking and cussing loudly as they walk back to their apt at 3am. I think the main problem w/Oak Lake now is the quality of people that have moved into the complex. When you bring in trash, things get trashy- there's no way around that. I do feel that management does the best that they can to keep the complex to a decent standing, but better discretion at the beginning would probably help. I'm sure there's a better renter option on the waiting list... The worst thing for me is the bugs in the summer. If they could get rid of those and I could get additional storage, I probably would sign my lease again. I have another 6 mos to truly decide, but apartments in general are just crappy all around. It's just a matter of knowing what you can and can't deal with-- and what is the safest and most economical option. But if they raise the rent again, and I heard that now they have the residents paying for water, I think I would have to look elsewhere-- my apt wouldn't be worth that much... But even after reading reviews of other apartments in the area, Oak Lake is definitely one of the better properties. You really could do worse... The only way to do better is Willow Lake- which is like paying a mortgage-- or just buy a house... I will just have to rent a carpet cleaner and perhaps do my own exterminating, but I wouldn't mind staying at Oak Lake until I was able to afford my own home.
