Resident 2014

5/17/2014

Oh my, let me just start at the beginning. Looked at a townhouse 2 weeks before moving in. It was not clean/prepared whatsoever at this point and was told "It will be ready for move in by then, for sure." We werent worried, as they had plenty of time. Signed the lease on a Friday afternoon on our lunch break and planned on moving some stuff in that night to get a jump on things. The leasing agent knew this was our plan. During the lease signing process, knowing we were short on time-not only was the staff unprepared as far as paperwork goes, they answered the phone at least 10 times, and then proceeded to help another tenant who walked into the office. While we were sitting there, hearing all of her personal business. We certainly didnt have time to do a walk thru then, so we met at the apartment that evening. To our major disappointment, nothing was done. They didnt even sweep the kitchen floor. Let me give you a run down. The kitchen floor had bugs all over it. Wasnt swept or mopped. It was filthy. Gunk on the cabinet doors, crap on the cabinet shelves; crums, dried honey, empty food bags etc. The laundry room had a big hole cut out of the drywall. There was a big puddle in the middle of the floor, which they said was water that came in from the dryer vent. The screen door was broke, dishwasher didnt work, main kitchen light didnt work, garbage disposal didnt work, 2 lights upstairs didnt work, bathroom vent didnt work, utility closet was falling off hinges, there arent screens for all the windows and theres no dryer hood outside for the dryer to vent properly. The toilets were disgusting. The carpeting job is horrible. Theres a huge lump in the middle of the living room. God knows what that is. Theres an inch gap from the edge of the wall to the edge of the carpet going all the way up stairs. We were told a few days before moving in that the door would be left unlocked so that the heat and water could be turned on. It wasnt. The water people said they detected water running, and they couldnt get in to see what was left on, so it wasnt safe to turn it on for fear of something over flowing. I understand that. So we moved into this place with no heat or water. I have a child. It wasnt til the middle of the next week that we were able to get utilities on. Thank God the electric was on at least. After almost losing our minds, they said theyd TRY to be that next morning to clean the place-we really lost it then. Our lease was up at the other place Saturday. We had to move. They got maintenance to come out Saturday morning, but it was iffy because they usually dont work on the weekends. SMH. I still had to clean it to my standards. God knows what was here before us!! So they fix the bare minimum to suffice so we could move in. Weve been here 6 weeks. It has taken numerous left messages to the offices, not so nice conversations with office staff-only to be given up on by them and passed off to the "Customer Service Mgr" who doesnt return calls, which led to us contacting corporate who finally lit a very small fire to get things going. The first time the dishwasher was "fixed", it was done while we were at work and no one was home. Its not a good feeling knowing strangers (i dont care who they are) have access to everything I have in the world. This in itself is stressful but I also have a very protective dog. The main reason I chose this place is because they allow dogs. With a $300 non refundable deposit and an extra $30 a month. I have to lock her in my room all day-they get to it when they can. And shes stressed out because theres a stranger in her house. So I come home and find a huge puddle of water on my dining room floor where water has seeped out from behind the dishwasher, thru under the cabinet. That took a few days to get someone to come out to say that theyll have to order another one. That took another few days. The garbage disposal had been fixed this whole time...but they snuck in while we were in between apartments while we were moving in and hadnt told us. Well, that broke a few days later. The air stopped working right...got hot. Raised more stink, they came out and I had a list. Wasnt all done. The new utility door they rigged needed painted. We were only able to get that painted because the painter lives close and he needed a jump one morning, and we mentioned it. On top of that-they tried to tell me that we were going to have to pay a full month even though we moved in on the fifth day of the month. Uhm, no. And the cherry....record keeping is NOT efficient. Theyve left 2 messages for me saying that Ive not paid my pet deposit in full, which I have. I have records of those checks clearing. They claim that this is a serious issue which, if not resolved immediately, will require getting corporate involved. Am I in a hurry to respond? Not at all. I will enjoy my weekend and resume business on the next business day. Ive rented from these people before with a good history...years ago when different people ran the offices. Different times, I tell ya. Its gonna be a long year. I just wanted to share this experience. If youre reading this, your smart enough to do your research before hand. Let me share with you the definition of a slum lord-Slumlord is a slang term for a corrupt and dishonest landlord that attempts to make as much money as possible by spending as little money as possible on the maintenance of his or her properties, sometimes called slumlord housing." Oh yea ill mention too that during the initial application process, because I recently filed for bankruptcy, they need the last months rent ...in 3 payments over the next 3 months...on top of $755 rent and utilities. Ive taken pics of everything. There are too many to post. Also..all of a sudden, out of nowhere we have ants. A LOT of ants. Happy Renting!!
