Resident 2014 - 2016

4/4/2016

Resident 1 year, 3 mos (11/2014-02/2016) Safety: Heard gun shots from nearby neighborhood across the park from the complex. Called police & they confirmed they were aware and acting on this. Also, a strange person claiming to be an 'investigator' kept buzzing our apartment asking to be let into the building. Obviously was not an investigator. Appearance: More often than not, trash is strewn about all over the place (in grass next to sidewalks, against fences by car parking spots). There was even dirty underwear next to our car (gross). Inside entryways are worn (walls and railings banged up really bad without any attempt at repair in what looks like years). Garage doors left open year-round with trash/junk/etc (vacant garages that I saw maintenance use). Maint: Only responded to repair requests within first three months of living there, the rest of my requests were ignored or not followed up with. My fridge leaked the entire time I lived there & the bath tub was unusable, the drain cover did not hold in water. The hot water heater started leaking out of nowhere & we did not discover it until a long time had passed, so it was moldy. The maint rep that came to clean it used a vacuum that blew red dust all over the apartment. They never cleaned that, so we spent days wiping down everything, tables, walls, cabinets, etc. We'd think we got it all, then would go wipe something at a later time & the towel would be bright red again. Heat was out for 3 days mid-winter, maint said to turn the oven on while waiting, lol. Maint does not set up appts with you either. You leave your number & they never call to set up a time with you. If you do not want them to enter w/o you present, they never come. Happened to me multiple times. I'd open a ticket by calling & inputting online, nobody came or followed up. I'd ask the office I called why nobody came & was told it was not their responsibility to follow up once they enter it in the system. Notices: Notices from the mgmt office are inconsistent & left in odd places at weird times. At least three times, notices were left on the floor in front of my door the evening on a Sat, w/o anybody knocking, & they had time-sensitive materials that were purposely back-dated for when they were distributed. When I'd point that out to office staff the day I received them, they said it had to have been distributed on the day on the letter, but that was a lie. Why not officially mail notices? Bc that would cost them, they would have to actually be a working office following correct procedures, & wouldn't be able to blame the renters for being late to respond after receiving back-dated notices. This occurred after a new management team started during my lease. Parking: I was towed in the middle of the night from resident parking, when my sticker was displayed on my windshield. I had to figure out a way to go pick up my car myself, at a location that was not within walking distance. I was not charged, since they towed me wrongfully, but it still was ridiculous. I had a wedding to go to in Michigan & came out with my dress to see that my car had disappeared. Be prepared to get mysterious scratches/dents from other residents. I have at least 3 from irresponsible/reckless people parking next to my car. For some other drivers in the complex, they can get pretty reckless. The speed bumps are annoying, but they clearly were put there for a reason. My bldg didn't have speed bumps in front & it sounded/felt like a drag race. Walking my dogs or taking the trash out always felt like a risk. Cost: Not worth it. I lived in a very large studio in Chicago's Gold Coast (Rush & Elm), 2-bed in Edgewater, 2-bed in Bucktown, 2-bed in Avondale; all were the same price or less than my outdated 1-bed apartment here. I'd still be in Chicago if school residency didn't require Indiana. It is better bc you have more options & most of the landlords are the owners who actually care about their facilities, quality & residents. Suburbs of Chicago seem to just be profit-driven management companies that do not provide what's promised.
