Resident 2008 - 2010

9/21/2010

My number one complaint, and what motivated me to publish negative reviews, is the awful noise pollution that I experience at Runaway Bay. Ironically the noise pollution is supplied by the management at Runaway Bay itself, not neighbors. Runaway Bay has an office like any other apartment complex, but this office has an ear splitting alarm that can be heard a quarter mile away, in range of 100s of Runaway Bay residents. Unfortunately this alarm goes off constantly, 4 times in 1 week is the record since I moved in, and always about 3 or 4 in the morning. This alarm wakes up 100s of residents, and 19 out of 20 times it goes off because someone tried to use the gym too late. I have lost countless nights of sleep over it, and have gone to work exhausted each time. Every single one of my complaints to the Runaway Bay management team fell on deaf ears. Not only that, the alarm makes no sense. You catch burglars with silent alarms, not ear splitting ones that give the burglars enough time to be ten minutes away before police arrive. In addition to the alarm, the same thing has happened with lawn maintenance. For whatever reason Runaway Bay has decided that they will begin lawn work anywhere from 7:30 - 8:00 am, which is preposterous. It's once again Tuesday morning, and the only reason I'm awake, and exhausted, is because I was woken up hours early by loud lawn mowers blaring through my window. Numerous requests to management to simply please wait until it isn't the crack of dawn to start mowing has fallen on deaf ears. Even the National Do Not Call Registry does not allow telemarketing calls before 9 am, and we can turn our phones off, we can't do anything about this needless noise. It is obvious that the staff here cares absolutely nothing for it's residents, ignoring or taking all concerns lightly. Not wanting my entire review to concentrate on noise pollution, I can quickly review pricing. In a nutshell, you do not get what you pay for. An unremarkable 1 bedroom apartment here can cost you $730 a month. They don't advertise this of course, what they do is make you pay water, trash, sewage, etc, expenses that almost no other apartment complex in the country charges it's residents. They give some excuse that they are trying to fight for the environment by charging residents directly, but it s just a red herring excuse to hide rent expense from apartment price listings. This tacks on an average of $50 to your already high rent for this area. I could understand the price if you got a spacious luxurious apartment with granite counter-tops, jetted tubs, and vaulted ceilings, but the apartments here are nothing special that you can't find anywhere else for a far less significant price. There are some other complaints that I had, but mentioning them would help Runaway Bay identify me, which is something I want to avoid until my lease is up and I have an opportunity to move. But please take this review seriously, and consider living elsewhere in the South Bend/Mishawaka region.
