Resident 2010 - 2011

5/6/2011

I have lived in Sycamore Place Apartments for a year now and I have renewed my lease for next year. I am a student of Indiana State University and if it was not for thecomplex being so close to campus I would NOT be renewing my lease. This complex is very poorly managed. Management is very rude, cowardly, and disprespectful to young tennants. I have had several problems with management that I will explain. The first problem was that I was in Terre Haute over the weekend and my keys and wallet got locked in my car, therefore I could not get in my apartment. I called Sycamore Place's emergency line that deals with lockouts over the weekend. The woman I spoke with assured me that she would speak with a maintence man and call me back promptly. I then recieved a call back from the same lady saying that because my wallet was locked in my car that there was no way they could unlock the door because my ID was in my wallet. I told the lady that I absolutly had to get in my apartment or I would have no place to stay that night. She then had the maintence man call me and tell me basically the same thing. He also said that I needed to pay a locksmith to have my car unlocked, which I would have had no problem doing but at the time I had an Audi TT sportscar that they could not pop the windown in to get to the unlock button. I then demanded to speak to a manager which I see no reason why a company like this can not provide a manager to speak with a customer. The people on the line once again assured me that they would contact the manager and she would call me. I never reciever a phone call so I called back and the help line lady told me that the manager was out of town (did not want to deal with my problem) and could not contact me back which infuriated me. I then recieved a call from the maintence man saying he could verify my social security number in the main office and unlock the door. Why didnt they just say that in the first place? I also never recieved a call or email from the manager appologizing for my inconvience. The second problem I had was when my old roomates were signing off on our lease so my new roomate could move in this coming year. We were having trouble setting an exact time for an appointment (which apparently you need an appointment to get anything done here, even for a 5 minute ordeal like signing papers). So I called and spoke with the manager about them not possible not being able to make an appointment and that we may have to do it whenever we get a chance. The reason my roomates were not sure of the time they could be there was because they both lived 2 hours away ( 1 had a job and 1 was dealing with basic training for the U.S. Navy) which I explained to her. She then had the nerve to tell me in a very rude tone that " We are open from 9am-7pm Monday thru Friday and that fits everyones schedule. I then ended the conversation as I saw I was getting nowhere. The next week my roomates had one day that they could both be there so they came up that night and stayed with me. We were there promptly at 9am when they opened to which no employees were there. We waited for a half an hour and finally the MANAGER showed up at 9:30 (THEY OPEN AT 9). The first thing she asked was do you have an appointment? , not sorry I am running late or anything. She then told us that unless the other employee had an opening we could not sign the papers, which luckily she did. But the manager could not even let us in to sign papers which only took 5 minutes to do!!!! My third problem happened just recently when I came to my apartment after being gone all weekend and noticed someone vomited on my front porch. I could tell that it had been on there for a while as it looked like the sun had baked it in to the concrete and it was dry. I did nothing becuase I assumed maintence would clean it up in the next couple of days. But instead they sent me an email saying that I had to clean it by the next day at 4pm. I then replied saying that the vomit was not mine and that I saw no reason that I should have to clean it up since I am not renting the sidewalk. I also stated that they would need a pressure washer or a hose to clean it up which as renter I do not have in my apartment. Also, I asked for an estimate of the charges and they said there is a flat rate of $75 until the work is done to give a real amount. They could not even give me an estimate of the charges. The manager then replied back that it was considered damage to their property (puke on the sidewalk really?) and that all I needed was a scrub brush, a bucket, and some soap and water to clean the mess. I then called to speak with her in person because I was getting angry and I am not the type of person to sit behind a computer and talk big like she obviously is. When I called in I was told that she was in a meeting ( which is what I am told every time I try to speak with her) and that she would call me back as soon as possible. I then recieved what she described as a "call back" email the next day after the deadline to have the vomit cleaned was past. I immediatly went straight to the office where she works to speak with her. As I pulled up I noticed she was getting someting out of her car so I went in the office becuause I felt the parking lot was not the place to discuss my problem. So I proceeded inside and told the receptionist that I was there to speak with her and she said that she had went out to her car and would be back in very shortly so I waited. Around 15 minutes went by and finally the receptionist went outside to find her. She came back in and said that she was doing an interview (OUTSIDE??? there is only one office building, the one I was in) and she could not speak with me at the time. She obviously saw me walk in and was too much of a coward to speak with me in person. This problem is still ongoing and I have still not spoke with her in person. Also when they cleaned the vomit they used a scrub brush and soap and like I said it is not all gone, it will take a pressure washer to get it all off. Sycamore Place is only good because of its location for ISU students and its receptionist who is very nice. Unfortunately for the receptionist the manager gives her all the dirty work to handle. The manager seems to act as if she is much smarter than the residents because they are mostly college kids and do not stand up like I have.
