Resident 2013 - 2015

1/16/2015

Peppermill has gone downhill in my time here, and I would avoid anything owned by Hunter Properties (they have several in the area). Hunter seems to know how to hire people who can live with themselves after telling lie after lie to residents. My most recent incident today was my car getting stuck in the ice on the parking lot that they have not treated and barely plowed (sidewalks are in a similar state). If you walk to the office there is clear evidence of salt having been put down near there, but elsewhere there is none. I was told that it was a re-freezing issue--how has it refrozen everywhere except in front of their office? Magic? When I called about my car being in the middle of the parking lot, the response was "Well, do you have any kitty litter?" She claimed maintenance would be called right away but a kind neighbor pushed my car for me while I waited (and began spreading kitty litter). I am moving next month due to an "business decisions" and management issues back in late October. Only 3 days before I was required to either renew my lease or give notice that I would not (which, btw, is 180! days before the lease ends) they told me "oh, by the way, all of our leases end in July now." There are a few exceptions to this if you pay more, but you cannot choose just any month. I just wanted to be on the same 1-year lease I had been on. That manager lied to me and told me that "most properties in West Lafayette are doing this" -- well, a quick call to the City's Rental Housing Inspection staff made it clear that this was not true. I imagine most/all of Hunter Property locations are doing this, but I feel that she was lying to give the impression that I had no other options anyway--on top of having the deadline hanging over my head to renew. I felt I was being bullied into renewing, but luckily I found a different place with an opening at almost the right time (but thanks to that nonsense I'm paying a full month in both places). Management and staff has had almost a complete turnover 3 times in recent months, which I think is telling. In addition, floors are downright icy and the entire apartment is drafty, so I'm paying a lot for heating. When the wind is blowing the right way, I can go into my walk-in closet and close the door and feel a draft blowing right through the walls (discovered when I thought I was closing off the window draft when I was spending time organizing in there). Maintenance usually responds quickly to service issues, but it is not always resolved quickly. I have written a review before about the hallway smoke alarm batteries being 2 years expired and not being taken care of, even after trouble with the first one. I'm sure I'm in for more "excitement" in my move-out process. I suggest everyone just avoid the hassle to begin with. Edited to add photos which were taken at around 8:45 a.m. the morning after I was told that they were spending 4 hours every morning taking care of the snow/ice.
