Resident 2004 - 2005

3/19/2007

My husband and I lived in a one-bedroom apartment from Summer 2004 to Winter 2005. The main attraction for these apartments is the price: our apartment was only $500/month, with all utilities included -- even cable TV and high-speed Internet access through the Purdue network. (The Internet access was especially convenient for me, since without the connection I would have had to spend all day in the computer labs -- I was studying Computer Science.) So it was MUCH cheaper than any of the other apartments we saw that close to campus.

Our particular apartment (which is now being torn down for the Discovery Park) was about a 3/4 mile walk to campus, or you could take the bus which came by 3 times every 30 minutes during the day. (However, the busses did not run in the evening or during summer classes.) The Purdue West shopping complex was right across the street, with several fast food and pizza restaurants.

The apartments themselves are old, with nothing fancy. The kitchen, dining room, and living room are actually all one big square, so there's not much space. The kitchen has just the basics: a sink with no garbage disposal, a gas oven, a decent amount of cupboards but not much counter space if you want a microwave or other appliances, a fridge, and an old fashioned exhaust fan on the wall that vented air outside the apartment. The bathroom was tiny with no storage space except for a tiny medicine cabinet. The hall and bedroom closets had no doors, though there were sliding rings on the ceiling. We made our own makeshift closet door (or curtain) by attaching hooks to a queen-sized bedsheet. (The doorway was too tall for a shower curtain.) The bedroom was fairly small -- we had a double bed and a dresser, and I think a queen-sized bed would have been a tight fit. The entire apartment had tile floor, which was not very fun in the winter. There was a laundry room in the basement, but unless your apartment was in the one entryway that the laundry was in, you did have to walk outside a few feet to get there (not fun in the rain!)

There was no air conditioning, but if you bought a window unit, maintenance would install it for you. (However, you had to take the unit with you when you left -- I don't know why the apartment couldn't have just installed permanent window units and added a few dollars to the rent!) There was also no thermostat; the heaters were controlled by the management. (We personally thought our apartment was a little too warm in the winter.)

The office staff seemed friendly enough the few times we visited them. There was an online system for reporting maintenance issues, and the maintenance always did a great job of coming the next day and fixing our problems.

Each apartment was assigned one numbered parking space, and if there were enough available, you could get a pass to park a second car on the street. Dogs and cats were only allowed in a small number of apartments, but you could have caged pets in any apartment. You also had the option of renting a garden plot in the back of the complex. The grounds were gorgeous though, they were the only apartments so close to campus with tons of open grassy areas and many mature trees!

The complex was also very family-friendly: there were kids running around everywhere and several playgrounds and a daycare. There were many community events: activites for kids, ESL courses, cooking classes, computer classes, etc.

Overall, these are great apartments for the price, if you can get over the small, old-style floorplans. I would definitely recommend them if you are a Purdue student who is tight on money!
