Resident 2001 - 2004

2/1/2005

I moved into these apartments a couple of years ago, and generally have been happy with this complex. It is a small complex, and the management made it clear to me that they enforce noise rules, and I do have to say that this is one of the most quiet apartments I've ever had!

It is set in a nice residential area, and is very private, located at the end of a residential street. Although 95th Street is adjacent, there is no way to get from 95th Street (or any other busy street) directly onto Melrose Drive, keeping traffic to a minimum.

The apartments are large, and mine came equipped with all new appliances. As far as the layout is concerned, I have no complaints except that the kitchen is very small and has little counter space, and there are no washer/dryer hookups (these are in the basement of each building). The walk-in closet in the bedroom and the door separating the bath and toilet from the washroom area are nice touches.

I do have a few concerns. First, the painting job in the bathroom is shoddy! There are large paint glops on the wall, and the paint used is a high-gloss paint that is shiny in some spots and dull in others. The paint in the rest of the apartment is blotchy in places as well. I can also see the drywall studs in the wall, like these were never properly covered up.

Additionally, the apartment is old (built in the early 70s) and is showing its age. I have fairly large cracks in nearly all the corners of my apartment, probably from the settling of the foundation. The caulk around the bathroom sink is loose and yellowing, and there is a large chunk out of the under-sink pressboard cabinets in the bathroom.

My only other complaint would be that there are only two small washers and two small dryers for every two buildings (shared through a common basement). Sometimes, this simply isn't enough. Many people do two loads of laundry at one time due to the small size of the washer tub, which means that the rest of us have to wait. On weekends, I have seen lines of laundry baskets waiting for the first person to finish. It also seems rather expensive: $1.50 to wash and $1.50 to dry. I have often taken clothes to the laundromat because it is cheaper and I can always find an available machine.

However, I have to say that for the price, this is overall a great apartment. The management does a great job on upkeep of the grounds, and they have responded quickly to any complaints that I have had (a leak and a broken dishwasher were repaired within 24 hours of my reporting it). Management also lives on-site, so they are readily available if anything goes wrong.

Another nice aspect of this complex is the fact that all the outside doors are locked, so security is greatly enhanced. There are deadbolts on each apartment door as well. I don't think a single woman could do much better as far as security is concerned.

If you are considering a move to Craigmont, I hope the information I've provided has been helpful. I've been pretty happy here.
