Resident 2014

3/31/2014

This is a preliminary review because we're not quite moved in yet, but I wanted to brag on the maintenance staff. We were given a checklist on the condition of the apartment, which we had to fill out before they gave us our mailbox keys. I took the opportunity to list EVERYTHING that could possibly be wrong, right down to a few ants coming in the window. We are paying more for an "updated" apartment, so I wanted to be sure we are getting what we paid for. Not every appliance is new, as they'd claimed (the stove has some cosmetic damage on the cooktop), and the carpet is smushed down in places (apparently from someone's heavy furniture or exercise equipment...nothing we can't live with. We have to pay $20 per month for our dog above and beyond the rent; I've never lived anywhere where they charged extra per month for a pet beyond the deposit, but that's apparently more the rule than the exception in Lexington. I did have two major issues, however, that rather distressed me: the bathtub took hours to drain, and the water temperature turned cold after only 3" of bathwater was drawn. I was SO looking forward to a good hot soak in the tub after the awful place we lived before! But the very day I turned in my list, Bill and Michael came out and took care of the slow-draining tub, set the half-height hot water heater up to 125 (it was set way too low), and also removed a loose screw that had fallen down into the garbage disposal (which made such a terrible racket I was afraid to use it). They also had someone come right out and spray for the ants. So I'm really impressed with how quickly everything was taken care of. Now, our neighbors upstairs apparently have some heavy-duty exercise equipment. We moved in on a Saturday, and on Saturday and Sunday it sounded like somebody was throwing around bowling balls up there. (Weight-lifting, probably.) But the duration was not long and we can live with that as long as it's not too frequent or too late at night. It's pretty quiet most of the time. I can hear dogs barking in a neighbor's apartment in our building occasionally, but it's faint and something that will soon be relegated to background noise. One thing I should point out that was a disappointment: In the model we looked at, there was an ice maker in the freezer, something we've become very accustomed to having. There wasn't one in our unit, so I reported it. Bill said there are no ice makers in any of the apartments because they tend to be a constant source of leaks. I suggested to him that they need to remove the ice maker from the model apartment so people don't expect to have one. Another disappointment is that we aren't allowed to have a portable washer or dryer; they want you, apparently, to use their laundry facilities and there are no hookups in the apartment for a regular W/D. But there is no place to sit in the laundry room and no place to park there either. We are elderly, so that's going to be rough on us. We'll have to hand-wash some things and hang them up in the bathroom to dry, but that won't work for our heavier items. On the whole, though, this is a wonderfully spacious apartment and will suit our needs very well. Spring is springing, and the forsythia outside our window is blooming. We feel good about this move.
