Resident 2006 - 2008

8/6/2008

Country Village Apartments is in the process of becoming Newberry Parc Apartments, and great promises were made by the new management as far as renovations and better "curb appeal". However, while Country Village was a decent enough place to live (though not without its problems), Newberry Parc is shaping up to be just plain awful. Construction is endless and on a constantly shifting schedule, with the management making bizarre demands such as "leave your apartment unlocked for the entirety of the next two days or take off work to let the construction crews in". (This was to facilitate the installation of new windows - I returned home that day to find the door to every single apartment in my building standing wide open as workmen, and presumably anyone off the street, milled in and out of people's units.) There has allegedly been an ongoing attempt to pave the parking lot for the last two weeks, and almost every day we receive a notice to vacate one half of the lot or the other to accommodate this, only to return to find no work done and a new notice taped to the door noting -new- dates when the parking lot must be clear. All of this, I suppose, could be ignored as a one-time issue, but the fact of the matter is that the management here is just piss-poor. Under Country Village the management was friendly but not terribly effective (long waits for maintenance requests for example), but under Newberry Parc the management is just plain rude. The lady who supervises the compound, is combative over the smallest matters and her assistant is just as bad. When I came home from work today, every single apartment in my building was tagged with "late rent" notices. Why? Because no rent bills were sent out this month! I went down to the office to talk to the manager only to find her gone for the day (at 4:45 PM) and was forced to deal with her assistant, who rather aggressively claimed that "bills are a courtesy". A courtesy? Sending someone notice that their rent is due is a courtesy? For the last two years we've gotten a bill every month, and now not only do we not get a bill, but we then get a $30 late fee tacked onto the rent because of it. Judging by the rest of my building, this came as surprise to EVERY SINGLE PERSON living here. When it comes to squeezing more money out of you the management here is ruthlessly efficient, but when it comes to alleviating problems they don't particularly care, especially if these problems occur during hours of the day when the management isn't here. Since the new ownership took over, there have been raucous groups of teenagers (usually at least a dozen) prowling the parking lot almost every night. Not more than a month ago I even had to call the police to break up a gang fight. Nonetheless, repeated calls to the management have not yielded so much as a call-back about the problem. It seems that as long as the manager herself can't see it, it doesn't happen. Promises have been made to fix various issues in our unit that, in all fairness, have been present since the days of Country Village, but thus far little has been done. Repeated calls to fix the barely-functional shower head (there was no way to take a shower without the bath spigot also running full blast) have only recently been addressed. Again, in all fairness, an issue with our air conditioner malfunctioning was repaired after only 3 days of 95-degree heat, but overall responses have been slow. Since almost all of the fixtures in these apartments are rather old and require frequent maintenance, this is very troubling. The apartments here are decent, but the management is distinctly unfriendly. They've taken a condescending tone with us every single time we've had to go to them about an issue and give the distinct impression that they think they are better than the tenants. Management leaves the premises at 5 o'clock (or earlier) every day is and difficult to contact once they are gone. If you have regular job hours it is almost impossible to contact management, and on the days when, for example, I rush home to speak to the manager she is always more interested in bullying me out of the office so she can leave. I honestly can't recommend this place at all anymore, which saddens me because Country Village was once a nice place to live. Newberry Parc, on the other hand, should be avoided like the plague.
