Resident 2008

8/2/2011

A wonderful home for 3 years!

My husband and I lived in an apartment at Mansions in the Park for almost three years, from August of 2008-June of 2011 while I was a graduate student at LSU. We had a 2 bedroom, 1 bath place on the 2nd floor and it was honestly a wonderful place for us to live. It was conveniently located for both of us--my husband worked downtown, and I of course went the LSU campus, and the commute for both of us was 10-15 minutes (longer in rush hour of course...gotta love Baton Rouge traffic!) The apartment was not hip and modern or anything, but it was clean and cheerful with lots of windows and a beautiful balcony. There are several good restaurants only minutes away (try Sushi Yama past the corner of Perkins and Essen...our favorite place!), and an Albertson's and gas station right across the street. I loved that the apartment complex was centrally located, but set back from the road so you didn't hear any cars/sirens, etc. BREC finished the park next to the complex in 2010 and Mansions put in an gate (with entry code) so residents can walk over and enjoy convenient outdoor recreation. As soon as they put in the gate, we used it almost every day. Also, if you're a health nut, the Mansions gym is insane! I have to sheepishly admit that I only used it a handful of times (grad school was pretty exhausting), but my husband loved it. They have all the equipment you'll find at a high-priced fitness club. The pool is also lovely, with plenty of spots to sit in the shade. Unlike some places where we've lived, the management kept the pool and grounds clean and neat. Our apartment itself had a great layout with a large master bedroom and a very big closet and a good sized extra bedroom that we used as a study. The living area was open and inviting. Perhaps most importantly, I always felt safe and secure. My husband had to be out of town quite a lot, and I was frequently home by myself, but I never felt the least bit afraid. Because the complex is set back from the road, there is very little non-resident traffic. Also, there was a Baton Rouge police officer who lived on site, and he kept his police car parked right by the front gate (I only use the past tense because I can't say for sure if this is still the case, but it was while we were residents). Nothing is perfect of course, and there were some things about our apartment that were not ideal. Perhaps the worst thing was that the walls were very thin, so we could hear our neighbors quite clearly, especially in the stairwells outside. This obviously got pretty annoying sometimes. Also, because of the thin walls, our utility bills were quite high. But the rent was reasonable, so we felt we could live with that. Lastly, the parking is not covered, so carrying groceries inside in the rain was entertaining. All in all though, we loved living there. When I finished my grad program, my husband and I got better jobs in our native Texas and upgraded to a much fancier place here. Sometimes I still miss our little Mansions in the Park apartment though. I will always look back on our time there with nostalgia :)
