Resident 2011 - 2012

7/20/2012

There are some things people need to know before they move in here. 1. Don't be fooled by the low rent. The apartments have no insulation, so what you save in rent will go out the window with heating/cooling costs. Most people run a $300 heating bill if you have kids and can't afford to keep the house cold during the winter time. Invest in fans, because it's way cheaper than running the central air. And if you ask for your windows to be fixed, they'll give you a box to put plastic over the windows. 2. The place has BUG problems. Fleas. Bed bugs. I called the exterminator once, and they said they were spraying for bed bugs, which I confronted the land lady, Lisa, about and she made me promise I wouldn't tell anyone about the bug issues. If you have pets, make sure that they're on flea/tick medicine, because just because they say they don't allow dogs doesn't mean anything. Dogs live there all the time, and they won't do anything about it. The dogs bring in fleas and other issues and will infect your cats. 3. Unless you're on one of the building ends, people are very disrespectful of noise. And they throw their cigarettes everywhere. 4. Lisa and Mike were very nice. However, when we moved out, the management that walked through claimed that we left the place a mess and that they had pictures but those pictures couldn't be shown to me. Yeah right. He wanted to charge me 35 bucks to wipe down the kitchen cabinets (which I had done myself the day I moved out.) I refused to pay it, and so they kept a portion of my security deposit, even though I left over 200 dollars worth of landscaping at the apartment that I paid for and did myself to make the apartment front prettier. I am very finicky and a neat freak, and I scrubbed everything down, even getting on my hands and knees to do the floors, before I left. 5. Parking is TERRIBLE unless you live on the side of the building closest to the big lot. People from around the neighborhood park in the lot across the street, and people park like idiots, so if you live on the far side of the building, bring your walking shoes because you're going to be walking a lot. And vandalism is rampant. My car was keyed a month after leasing it for no reason--and I'm not the only one this happens to. 700 dollars to fix. Also, people park their broken down cars in the lot all the time, and the management does nothing to rectify the situation. So prepare to be frustrated by the lack of any sort of care from the landlady. 6. Trash. There is one dumpster on the far side of the building in the large parking lot. It's great for people close to that side. But if you live on the opposite side, like I did, prepare to do a lot of hauling. And forget throwing anything heavy away. Unless you have help, you won't be able to carry it that far alone. 7. Office hours. The landlady works from 9 to...4ish. Sometimes earlier if she doesn't feel like hanging around. Forget having her monitor the grounds, either. If you ask her to address an issue (parking, dogs in the apartment) she says that you have to get the name of the person who is causing the problem and then she'll address it. Otherwise, forget it. 8. Cost. I'm putting this one last on the list because I have no proof that this wasn't just a mistake of theirs. We were told by the marketing guy, Tony, that we'd get the apartment at 900 and then there would be a rent increase to 940. When we signed the lease, it was 940 with a rent increase to 970. When I showed them their mistake, they basically said oh well. Make sure they don't do that to you.
