Resident 1997 - 2005

Maintenance: You'll need maintenance if you live there for any length of time. The buildings are quite old, and I've discovered holes in the plaster that appear to have been repaired with "paper." Fineberg maintenance and their contractors are slow to respond to maintenance requests, do shoddy work, and don't clean up after themselves. They had to replace my stove because several of the burners didn't work and the new one they put in had a malfunctioning oven knob. They replaced all the windows year ago which left a thick coating of dust all over the place. Don't be surprised if they wake you up in the morning in your bedroom for maintenance, they rarely schedule an appointment for maintenance as they are supposed to. Finally, I recently talked to someone who was in the realty business 10 years ago--When I mentioned I lived in the Fenway and had poor maintenance, they asked me if my landlord was "Fineberg" without me having to tell them.

Pests: Mice have free reign in many apartments, it doesn't matter if you keep your place clean. Unless you happen to find a unit with all the mouse holes somehow magically sealed, expect them. They leave little black presents on your kitchen counters. Roaches can be found as well. Though they sometimes go away for a while after a spray, there hasn't been a year where I didn't see several of them. The little roaches like to hang out around the bathtub, but I've seen the big roaches in the bedroom. One time I went to put on a clean shirt from the closet, felts something scratchy on my arm after putting it on, and then was horrified as a big roach fell out of the shirt I was now wearing.

Office: While some of the ladies that work in the main or maintenance office can be quite cheery, others seem to be in a constant state of constipation, like the ones that bark "What's your problem?" when you call with a request.

Noise: If you like peace and quiet, it's not the place for you. Many music students live there and the walls transmit sound easily.

Laundry: The laundry room has adequate washers and dryers (so long as you don't try to do laundry on Sunday) for a reasonable price. Since they are maintained by a separate company, the state of the machines depends on whether residents place a sign on malfunctioning units and call the washer/dryer company to have problems fixed. Typically, there are washer/dryer maintenance issues at least once a month.

A comment on others who have posted that complaints involve unreal expectations. First, I'm not a pampered college student, and in my experience, younger people/college students are more tolerant than older people/professionals. Second, I've lived in other apartments in the city to make a proper comparison. Third, Fineberg apartments being a little bit cheaper than other places is not a valid justification for poor maintenance. The state of Massachusetts sets up minimum safety and sanitary standards that must be met by landlords--I know multiple residents in the building who had city inspectors in their apartments that wrote 1-3 pages of violations.

Each person's experience will be somewhat different based on how long you live there, how much they charge you in rent (it can vary), the state of your particular apartment/building, and your personal background and tolerances. My hope is that other reviewers simply report their own experiences and refrain from criticizing honest reviews.
