Resident 2003 - 2005

4/3/2005

We moved into this building because it is beautiful, new, and was advertised as a "full-service" building for professionals (i.e., no kids). Part of this has held to be true, but mostly not...

It is true that the building was beautiful and new. When we first moved in, the common areas, including the carpets, elevators and woodwork were in good repair and made us proud to have guests enter--they often commented that the building looks like a high-end hotel.

"Full-service", however, apparently only means "someone to accept your deliveries from 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday". Don't expect much else from the somewhat less-than-friendly concierge at this building. Even getting dry-cleaning picked up and dropped off (an advertised service of the building) became such a hassle that I quickly decided I'd rather haul my laundry back and forth on the T than beg for it to be picked up.

Several months after we moved in, we were burglarized. Because the temperatures had already reached the mid-90's by the end of April last year and the building refused to turn on the air conditioning, we were forced to open our windows to keep from roasting alive. It was probably foolish to sleep with our windows open on the first floor, but the beauty of the building and neighborhood tend to lull you into a false sense of security. At any rate, someone came through the window while we were asleep, stole both of our wallets and the cash that was lying on a table and tripped the lock on the door, presumably to come back in after we'd left for work for whatever else he wanted. We called the police, filed a report and apprised the building's management (Garrison Square) of the situation, though nobody ever acknowledged or responded. Some months later, I was cooking dinner with the patio door ajar for fresh air (it was summer and still daylight) when I heard a crash on the patio. The burglar who was running into my apartment through the patio door had stepped on the loose storm drain and lost his footing. Thankfully, he was startled enough after making eye contact with me that he ran back across the courtyard and out the gate.

Now the bad news...
Though the building was advertised as "professional" and we were assured that students were not allowed, this is no longer the case as of last fall. I suppose that with the housing boom, the rental market fell off and Garrison Square was having trouble filling the building. So, they started renting to kids. Within a couple months of the start of the school year, there was a noticeable change in the building:
-The carpets are in shambles in the common areas and are occasionally decorated with food/trash/vomit
-The artwork was stolen off the wall in the lobby
-The elevator walls have been carved up with such colorful things as "Columbia sucks Mexico"
-Beer bottles and other trash are frequently left on the concierge desk
-Flags and blankets now decorate several windows as viewed from the courtyards
-All of the smokers on the floors above us toss their cigarette butts onto our patio and surrounding grass from their Juiliette balconies.
-We watched some kids wheel a keg down the hall on the bell cart prior to a party that lasted until 3am
-The trash room on our floor is so full from the leftovers of the keggers every weekend that you can't even open the door by Saturday

In short, the place has deteriorated into a college dormitory and we can't wait for our lease to end so we can get out of here; this seems to be the sentiment among the few "adults" left in the building. What a shame for the most beautiful, most desirable building in Fenway to come to this!
