Resident 2006 - 2009

7/6/2009

Moving overseas and sad to leave the PCG apartments - there are quite a few racist/immature comments from people who feel the rent controlled tenants are "below" them - some of the most interesting people I've met here are the tenants who have been here since the 80s, appreciate what they have, and take great care to convey a spirit of community to new tenants. Artists, musicians, and many other great people. As for the apartments themselves - first place I ever moved in where I immediately felt comfortable throwing down the mattress and sleeping. The entire apartment was clean to an almost obsessive level, and it's no stretch to say I would have eaten off the floors. The kitchen and bathrooms were spotless and everything was in good working order. We had a few minor issues over the years - thermostat, overhead light, tub drain, etc - everything was always fixed within 24 hours. The spaces are amazing - exposed brick, high ceilings, original floors, and huge windows. Tenants are encouraged to paint their doors, and one can spend an afternoon walking the hallways and seeing just how creative some people can be with this unique canvas. The courtyard, complete with charcoal grills and wiffle-ball suitable spaces, quickly made our apartment the default hangout destination when friends were in town. With a courtyard facing apartment we could leave the windows open at night and forget we're in the city - there's nothing else really like it in Boston. Moving in and out is as painless as can be - there's a loading dock and freight elevator available for tenants, and large dollies which can carry entire sofas or a car load of stuff. What one poster saw as a negative I believe is actually a good rule - the elevators, dollies, etc, aren't used past 8PM, so you don't have neighbors rolling loads of stuff down the hall at all hours keeping you up. Management has been great, and has been flexible in the occasional tight spot. Always friendly and ready to help. Probably the best feature of the apartments is the 24 hour guard staff - the guards are some of the friendliest people I've come across, and I could rest easy knowing they were there if my wife was running late from work, I was out of town, etc. The neighborhood is nice - quick access to the orange and green lines, the 43 bus to park st is right out front, and the 1 bus is a block away. Parking is usually ok - 80% of the time we'd grab a spot in the lot, and when it's full on-street parking isn't too bad. All in all I'd recommend PCG to any of my friends, living here has been great and we'll be back if we're ever in the Boston area again!
