The Lofts at East Berkeley
Resident · 2010 - 2011
I've lived in a number of apartment complexes in my life and this is probably the most poorly maintained ones. There are constant problems with heating, hot water, doors, elevators. Basically anything with moving parts that requires proper maintenance. Also, the building is located across the street from a homeless shelter, so you wake up to vomit on the sidewalk broken vodka bottles and sometimes blood. The building is extremely noisey, lots of traffic noise because of the bad windows and berkeley street goes from three lanes to one right in front of the building so there is a lot of honking. The bakery across the street is also quite loud, they have a PA system that they use all night and trucks are constantly coming and going. Heating/Cooling is a disaster. You only get one at a time. So if it gets hot in the winter you don't have a way of cooling your apartment. If its cold during the summer you can't turn on the heat. Our unit has a lot of windows so it gets painfully hot during the summer. The AC doesn't do much, its actually blowing most of the cold air between the walls. I complained about it, but it was never taken care of. The building isn't really any cheaper than some better taken care of buildings in the area, so if you really want to live in the south end (which I don't recommend) I'd look somewhere else.
