Resident 2010 - 2012

9/24/2012

I am living here and when I look at all these reviews, I find some truth in both the criticisms and praises (the last three reviews appeared on the same date, may be . . ). No doubt this apartment complex is one of the best-managed apartments in Brookline but not luxury as advertised. For example, most of the frames of the lights above entrance doors to apartments are not properly mounted nor painted. The management did the cheapest Winter Holiday (Christmas) decorative lights in the last few years. However, if I have any plumbing, lighting problem, the repair team will come literally in minutes. The management, especially the manager, Mary Froehlich, who was mentioned in several reviews, is actually a very professional and an amiable person. While some concierge never look at you when speaking to you, in recent years, we have had a few younger female concierges who were very friendly. Unfortunately they come and go in a few months time. With the exception of Barbara, who is dutiful, kind and warm, and is the best you can find in town. I think it is their policies: more business-minded than human-minded that was being criticized. For example, two of my good neighbors moved out earlier this summer. I believed that their carpets were as clean as when they moved in. But still the management deducted $200 from their deposit as carpet cleaning fee. For such a big company, this might look a bit greedy. Some reviewers mentioned about the facilities. Yes there is a real upgrade in the gym recently. However, the swimming pool is hopelessly small. A push with my legs will carry me to the furthest edge of the pool without swimming. In general, people living here are mostly very friendly but as in a heterogeneous society, there are a few exceptions. There is a Rabbi living here who treats you like you were transparent. No return for any friendly gestures as if some people, especially minorities, are ceremonially unclean. Last of all, there are comments about rent overpricing. I think Sydney Associate marked about 10% above the market norm. If there are some preferential deductions to owner s friend or synagogue believers, it is OK if this place is not viewed as a public establishment. I think, personally, since this is a big complex and this unfair rent adjustment will be a sensitive issue for the management to think about in the future.
