Resident 2002 - 2006

1/1/2009

I lived here a couple of years ago and dealt with this place for much longer than I should have. I'm going to try to be balanced, with what I thought was good, so-so, and bad. Good points: * It's a nice and big apartment. * It's sooo convenient. * Heat and hot water was included in the rent. * The building could be imagined to be very nice with the way the units are shaped. (It has great potential, if only the management tried) * Nice-looking kitchen cabinets, including a little china cabinet in the dining room. * Nice tall ceilings * Nice tile in the kitchen * Nice neighbors who lived there So-so points: * Street parking, esp when there's a snow emergency and all the nearby renters are all looking to find a place to put their car * No elevator. Again, I lived in a top floor unit (4 floors up, 3 sets of steps were floor, 6-7 steps per set). Nothing surprising here, but you will eventually be worn from walking that many steps, plus more steps to get to the basement laundry. * The light bulbs are hard to change (partly because of the tall ceilings). The screws don't hold the light covers too well and there was an incident where I had to replace one that fell and broke. * The kitchen drawers (3 drawers, that's it) are ancient. Old wooden construction without gliders, all the same large size. Bad paint/wallpaper job on the top. * The kitchen is a little smallish. Not much counter space, and not much space for a drying rack. I had a set up with tables and wooden planks to get around this issue. * Whenever there was a fire alarm from someone on the bottom two floors burning toast, I had many many steps down to the bottom and back up. Kinda sucked when that happened twice at 2am. * There's no roof access. There was, once upon a time, before they alarmed it. This also means that the hot air in summer no longer has anywhere to escape. * AT&T cell signal is poor in the building. Verizon was fine, on the other hand. * There was an incident where someone got shot (accidentally, I think) in a 1st floor unit. Being on the top floor and so far away, I was none the wiser until I heard about it from a neighbor. Anyways, the associated people moved out so that's the reason it's a "so-so" rather than "bad" point. Bad points: * Rent is expensive for what you get. You're paying for your neighborhood and the square footage, not for the quality or care of the unit. * I lived in a top floor unit. It got incredibly hot there at all times of year because of the construction of the building. The radiator controls were pretty much ON and OFF. ON meant too hot. OFF meant cold at night in winter. I wore a T-shirt and shorts in winter, and got a really powerful window A/C for the summer and just generally tried to not stay around much in summers. The radiator knobs leaked steam and spurted hot water occasionally. * The hot water would become lukewarm 5-10 times a year- especially if someone else downstairs was using it. It was better if you took your shower late at night (no one else using it). * The shower plumbing would leak, all the time- from the shower head, and from the faucet. * The kitchen sink is an ancient porcelain double-sink with peeling paint. * The tub was ancient with peeling paint and cracked wall tile that was falling off. After asking several times for them to address this over a few months, I tried to address this myself, but the results were temporary. * There were a few incidents where there were break-ins. Being on the top floor, I wasn't affected (I'm sure they didn't want to trudge up that many steps and risk being caught), but this review is for the whole building as well as for my unit. * The laundry machines broke several times, and they would took a week or so to fix them. Given how many steps there were to just check if there is a laundry machine available (and working), that was pretty rough. * Apartment management was not responsive unless it was an emergency or unless it would impact them financially. I usually had to pigeonhole them at their office, rather than getting a response by phone (and I called several times over several days before I would go do that). And even then they were so-so.
