Resident ā€¢ 2014

4/28/2016

I have lived here for several months now and I'm sure I'll have many more headaches at this place, so this may be premature, but people should know what they're getting into. As I see it, all decisions are made in the service of attracting new residents to the complex. This is made evident by all the money and effort put into making the lobby look nice, beautifying the leasing office, and enticing you with discounts on rent. Then, once you live there, they really could not care less about you. They know that if you move out, they will turn over your place quickly by offering an enticement to move in. This seems to be their M.O., and it's just one awful thing after another with this place. There are some good things. I will start here for fairness. Our apartment itself is actually very nice, for the most part. Like any other place, it has its drawbacks, but it's HUGE, well laid out, and has tons of closet space. The pool is nice and clean, and the grills are substantial. We've used them more than once. I also think the staff are genuinely trying to do a good job. It feels like they are. I don't know what exactly is going wrong, but I don't think the problem is with the employees themselves, most of the time. If I had to guess, I would pin it on the management company. Move-in day: Apparently, the complex was switching over to a new system, so they didn't have any "key fobs" for us, which would have allowed us to access the service elevator. Normally, this only would have been a slight inconvenience, but on this particular day, the normal elevator was also out of service. We had no way to move in our belongings. We had a uhaul and a delivery truck planned and no foreseeable way to get them in. The office staff had no way to help us. We were told the construction would be done by the end of July. We moved in toward the end of July, so we were hoping to not have to deal with it. No such luck. Constant construction well into the fall. Those beautiful pictures on the website promising a fitness center and the like were I guess not a lie, because I guess they would be back at some point? But meanwhile, I was paying for amenities I could not access. The laundry rooms: There are 6 washing machines on each side, which becomes 5 because 1 is perennially out of order, and approximately 125 units on each side (6 floors and about 25 units on each floor), so you do the math on that one. Maintenance: Maintenance is ok. Always responsive and timely. My beef with them is that a few times when they have come, they have moved our things around and not put them back - and I don't mean they moved my hair brush three inches to the left; they moved our furniture and didn't put it back. This is our home. Please treat it respectfully. Grounds: I would say the grounds are ok, but it's come to my attention that they don't seem to salt (or take any other precautions) when it gets icy, and based on signs they put up instructing residents to "be careful", it doesn't seem like they intend to. This is both dangerous and illegal. Noise: For the most part, it's decent, the walls can be thin, but we have a neighbor who we believe is a drug dealer who the staff won't do ANYTHING about. They have loud parties and there is a constant aura of pot in the hall, strange people coming and going at all hours, and no one cares. The worst, though was in the late summer when they took away the air conditioning we were promised. We needed to open the windows 24/7 to get the place below 80. Since we're right on Route 9, I'm sure you can imagine how noisy that is. The other thing about being right on Route 9 is that no matter which direction you want to go, you can only go East from the complex. You have to go a little ways and turn around if you are heading West, which does become a problem during rush hour (adds about 10-15 min to my morning commute). So now it's the holiday season. Everyone's getting packages. Some of them gifts from far away relatives, some of them things we've ordered to wrap up for family and friends. The leasing office, which is only open 9-5 during the winter on weekdays, 10-4 on the weekend, insists on accepting all of our packages, whether we want them to or not. I come home from work one day to find a note on my door (their preferred method of communication): if you leave your package in the leasing office for more that 2 days, it will be sent back from whence it came. So if you work from 9-5, and you get a package on a Monday, and can't get it until the weekend because they close up shop nice and early, TOO BAD FOR YOU!! The Waterview Grinch has sent your gifts back to Amazon!!! I share this because it is reflective of Waterview Terrace's general attitude toward its residents. We don't care if we are inconveniencing you, because ultimately, there is nothing you can really do about it. Like I said, it's a bait and switch: it seems like a nice place because when you tour, it's presented as such. Then you move in and you see how the sausage is made. Blech. If you do want to live here, please don't move in without asking to view the unit you will be living in. I know that sounds like common sense, but they tried to commit us to a lease without showing us our unit. And in general, ask any question that pops into your head. Don't be timid! You're going to be paying a lot of money, so if something seems fishy, confusing, unclear, or misrepresented, ASK ABOUT IT.
