Resident 2011 - 2013

1/4/2013

We have lived here since August of 2011 and love it. Everyone in the management office is great, especially -----. Everytime I've talked to them, they've been nothing but warm, helpful, and professional. The apartment is beautiful with exposed brick, post and bean ceilings, tons of built in storage space, and a very nice kitchenette with granite countertops. I especially love having the energy efficient washer and dryer in unit. The amenities are also quite nice with a 24hr gym (with good amount of equipment for an apartment complex gym), common rooms, cyber cafe with computers and printers, and a movie theater that is basically free to rent. There is more than enough parking between street parking and the building's resident lot. The one problem I've found is that more than a few residents refuse to park in one parking spot, which seems simple enough to do. Even so, I've never had a problem finding a space. It is extremely pet friendly with no pet deposit required and only $25/month per pet. We were actually warned on our tour of the building that the majority of tennants have dogs, so it isn't a good fit for someone who doesn't like dogs or some of the things that come with being surrounded by them. We are lucky to live on a quiet floor in the Essex building, but I will admit that sometimes walking through the other building feels like you're walking through the kennel with a different bark at every door. That being said, it's a pet friendly complex and dogs will bark. It's no secret that there are tons of pet owners here. I've been in the elevator with new furry faces more often than not, and that's something that I love about the building. As for hearing other noises, it's true that we can hear footsetps and other noises from upstairs. We can rarely hear anything from the apartments beside us. We originally looked at an apartment in one of the other buildings that has more of an industrial style and concrete floors. However, we feel in love with the exposed brick and wood ceiling in our apartment. We were warned that sound carries through the post and beam floors and that the concrete apartments were more insulated from noise, but we love the style of the essex building. I can hear footsteps and the occaisional sound of the pup upstairs dropping toys, but rarely voices or tvs. From someone who's lived in apartments in several cities for the past decade, it's nothing more than background noise (and honestly a lot quieter than several other apartments I've had). We were originally looking at apartments in the city which were a fraction of the size, had no amenities, and were far more expensive. We love all of the original details that they kept intact while updating the amenities. It's important to remember, though, that while the apartments are updated and lovely, they're in a very old mill building. If you don't like the charm of old buildings, hate dogs, and need complete silence, it's probably not the place for you. If you're looking for a charming loft apartment within walking distance to restaurants, downtown nightlife, and the train, you should check it out.
