Resident 2011 - 2012

10/22/2012

Location & Community: If you want to live in a city, Lowell is...okay. And if you want to live in Lowell, Loft27 is...okay. It's an easy walk through all of downtown, which has a decent art community (where the cool, calm and eclectic people hang out during the day) and a horrible club scene (where the loud, violent and disrespectful hooligans spend the nights puking into the streets). Residents: I was hoping for a building full of young professionals, based on city-living and the cool factor of living in a loft. While they exist, I don't see them often. Most of the people I encounter do not seem to actually live here. There are 2-bedroom apartments with 4 people living here, like a frat house, and the there are always "tailgaters"...those hanging out by the doors of each entrance, the gym, and the basketball court on their cell phones pretending to look for keys, but are actually just waiting to follow you in to take advantage of the facilities the residents are supporting. Also keep in mind that there are income-assistant apartments and that, of course being a city in Mass, many of the residents are collecting unemployment. If you want the cooler, younger, artsy crowd...go to Appleton Mills...oh wait...ALL of their apartments are income-capped. Facilities: Decent gym, 1/2 court, entertaining area and movie room. The negatives are the tailgaters, parents who think the entertainment area is a place to leave their children alone for the day/night and lack of community activities. Apartments: I was blown away by the 17" ceilings and windows with the open living concept and love looking out my window onto the canal. Most apartments, however, either look directly into the condos across the canal or the vacant building on the otherside...that has been under construction for a year and is likely to continue construction for years to come. #1 complaint- windows are completely inefficient and lead the winter cold through every crevice all the way through the front door. For 17" of windows, you have to master looking through them and not at the years for bug guts and bird smudge. I was told prior to signing my lease (I asked 4 times) that the windows are cleaned annually. It's been 2 years. I resigned my lease because I only plan to be in Massachusetts for 3 years and can't afford moving costs at this time. Also...the amount of space is nice for 1 person (and a boyfriend who lives here part-time). I would not suggest living at Loft27 unless you can deal with all factors above.
