Resident 2012 - 2013

3/27/2014

Disclaimer: This building was brand new when I was a resident (2012-2013) so I was able to take advantage of special discount prices on rent (I don't think they have those anymore). Everything was also brand new and unused so everything was absolutely clean and functional for me. Also, the parking structure and nearby restaurant and stores were not yet built (has Milk & Honey even been built yet??) so I can't really speak to any of that. When I moved in, I was a recent JHU graduate and a new JHSPH student so I chose 929 due to its proximity to my new campus (it's a quick 5 minute, 3 block walk). I lived in a 2 bed, 2 bath with a roommate that I found through a Hopkins roommate-finding website. I found the apartment to have ample enough space and privacy for the two of us. To speak to some of the complaints in the other reviews... NOISE: Street noises should be expected if you're going to live anywhere convenient in the city (people, traffic, sirens etc.). You also have to consider the fact that 929 is located only a few block from a world-renowned and very busy hospital (hence, the many sirens). I found the apartment building itself to be acceptably quiet. Of course in any apartment building you are going to hear some noises made by other people as everyone is literally living on top of one another. But I was never overly disturbed by any noise. SAFETY: This part of the city is NOT the safest. Anyone who chooses to live in 929 probably chooses to live there because it is the only nice apartment building within walking distance of JHMI. That being said, JHMI itself is relatively safe. There are security guards, cameras etc. all over the actual campus. 929 is about one block from the perimeter of the campus and provides its own security for that block. I never felt unsafe walking between 929 and JHSPH. Although, veteran Hopkins affiliates know which blocks are secure and which blocks should be avoided. I also never walked with my phone in my hand because the majority of thefts in the area are from neighborhood kids swiping the iPhone of an oblivious serial texter. MAINTENANCE: I never had a problem with maintenance. They fixed what I wanted and scheduled appointments with me to do so. Did they use my toilet? I don't know and I don't care. (The Help, anyone??) STAFF: I never found anyone to be remotely rude. Quite the contrary. Everyone was friendly. Now for my own complaints... - 929 is absolutely the best apartment building within walking distance of JHMI. BUT it is within walking distance of ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ELSE. Expect to drive, cab or bus to the grocery store or any sign of night life. - The other reviewers are absolutely correct in the utter ridiculousness that is the lock-out fee. I seriously had to pay $20 (or something outrageous like that.. I don't remember the exact amount) to have a security guard ride the elevator up to my floor and let me into my apartment. It makes. no. sense. - Yes, the living room couch that comes with the furnished apartments sucks major balls. Rock hard with no arm rests. Don't expect to spend any quality time on it.
