Resident 2009 - 2010

10/13/2010

This apartment was an easy place to find and my first mistake was not looking farther. I had no idea what the other options were. Its great and convenient if you are willing to deal with gloried window units for "central" heat and air -- the only thing central about it is that it has a thermostat that controls said wall unit. Not only are they covered with box enclosures which take up A LOT of your very small amount of floor square footage but in the winter they are just open portals to the outside environment. Plus, to keep the unit from freezing, when it hits 40F or lower outside they revve up -- yeah you are paying for it to blow in cold air. Did I mention that our two bedroom had only two of these things -- 1 bedroom had its own and the other had a vent off of the one located in the living room; talk about expensive to heat or cool that room at night while heating or cooling the rest of the apartment at the same time. After I taped cardboard over the vent into the second room during the winter it was much warmer without the constant cold air - we just didnt turn it on since everyone else was getting at least $400 utility bills and their apartments were still cold; ours was still almost $200 and that was with them turned off (thats almost $100 more than in the summer). I put up with it because I didnt realize what a bad deal I had. It was a fairly new building and there were lots of other students living there so I was willing to deal. If my air conditioner stopped twice in a week in july, and the second time on a sunday when apparently their 24 hr maintenance did come in (what the hell is it for then?) well that was fine, no big deal. What really got me was after we moved out, after two walk-throughs and ample cleaning, we finally got part of our deposit back. We were charged for carpet replacement. How they had to replace carpet that we had not spilled anything on and I had vacuumed weekly was a mystery. When they were asked about it, they admitted there was an element of normal wear and tear but since we had been last in the apartment we had done a lot of damage requiring its replacement; what damage I had no idea unless we were supposed to simply not walk on the carpet. A question about proof of damage produced only the invoice for the carpet replacement which we were supposed to take as proof that there was damage. How is an invoice proof of damage? All it says is that you replaced the carpet. The girls that work in the office are pretty much useless at getting anything done and one even implied that I was lying when I said that during the walk through she had said that the carpet might need to be replaced but WE WOULD NOT BE CHARGED. There are benefits to living at Camden - is convenient and the appliances are fairly new and it has in apartment washers and dryers, but if you want my advice, steer clear. There are a lot of other options with bigger apartments for less and definitely with better, friendlier service. The parking cost is average but they only have limited parking on site, and the rest has to park across the street and there are not enough spots for even one apartment to have a spot in the apartment garage; don't believe them about a waiting list, it doesn't exist. 24 front desk service seems nice until you find out that it wont turn off the smoke detector with an old battery that starts going off at 3 am -- you have to pull it out of the ceiling yourself and then wait for maintenance to come later in the day when they get around to it. Plus, 24 security just means there is a person behind the desk that can buzz people in who dont have key cards, and then not ask for ID or anything. If nothing else, living somewhere else you wont have to listen to every fire truck leaving the fire station you almost live on top of, every ambulance on its way to shock trauma, every large truck crashing over the light rails, or the light rail racing and screeching past blowing it horn loud enough to wake the dead.
