Resident 2004 - 2009

5/18/2009

Where to begin.... We have lived here for 5 years while I was a student at JHU. The location is great and an easy walk or bike ride to JHU, Loyola, or Hampden. Parking is ample on the street and free. Pets are free to have and the grassy area in the back is a nice place for them to go. And rent is very reasonable. Now the bad things... 1) Plumbing. Every single piece of plumbing in our apt has gone wrong. We have had our bathtub faucets burst out of the wall and filled up the entire bathroom causing a damaging flood. Pipes from apts above us have leaked down into ours. The drains clog easily and often. And every single time something has gone wrong, the management has sent someone who made it worse before calling a professional. 2) Heating costs AT LEAST $200 a month in the winter for a ONE BEDROOM apt. Turn off the built-in heaters and use space heaters and at best you'll save $50 a month. Window A/C units are cheaper coming in at around $100-$130 per month in the summer. 3) Hallways are ugly (torn old ugly stained carpeting, damaged ancient ripping wallpaper) 4) Building smells. Duh. 5) Management NEVER shovels snow in the winter. I have personally done it every time in the past few years without any gratitude from the office. 6) No rent drop box. Gotta either mail it the three blocks to the main office or travel over there to deliver. 7) No place to drop of packages. Better hope they make it and aren't stolen. Not always a guarantee. 8) TERRIBLE insulation and antique windows that are very hard, if even possible, to open. Better bring some pieces of plywood to prop them open. Also, suggest adding window locks since most are broken and the management doesn't care. 9) Timeliness to respond to problems? You're lucky if its 2 days. And this management only has 4 or 5 small buildings total. 10) Elevator - always breaks 11) Washer/dryer - always break or leak all over. Don't leave any soap in the laundry room or it WILL get stolen. Plus, it'll cost you $1.50 per wash or dry load every time. 12) Floor boards in apt are weak and warped. Mine has sunken in just by having a kitchen table on it. 13) Walls are cracked and poorly plastered to begin with. 14) Bathroom has no ventilation other than the window. But who wants to be in a first floor apt and have an open window while you shower? Mold loves this place. Oh, and the cheap disgusting "bath fitter" bathtubs have grout smeared all over them. 15) Fridge is way too tiny in one-bedroom apt. For some reason the 2-bedrooms get to eat more as they have a larger fridge 16) Ants? Got them. Mice? Yep. Cockroaches? Sure. 17) Rent is low but gets raised every single year ($20-50) 18) I have made all these things clear to the management. They (Vita in particular) are very nice people, but when it comes down to it, they don't respond to anything nor do they take any of these complaints and fix them. Only the cheapest fixes in this place. 19) This is Baltimore City so this is no surprise, but we've had our car windows smashed 3 times (in 5 years) and broken into twice just parked in front of the building. There is definitely more that I can't think of right now, but isn't that enough? DO NOT MOVE IN HERE!!! The building management severly needs to gut and fully renovate this entire building!!!!! But they won't. They're cheap. So if you're ok with that, than move in. But I say don't. I stayed here so long simply for the price, location, and laziness to find another place and move again.
