Resident 2013 - 2014

2/20/2014

The Redwood is nice in that it is safe (security, key fobs for entry, high above street level) and the rooms are spacious. However, the cons sadly outweigh the pros here. Although the off-hours security personnel are amazing, the management is beyond horrible. Besides the fact that the housing manager is extremely rude to residents, they have taken a number of steps in an attempt to save money that have not only IGNORED dangerous problems we reported concerning our apartment, but have made them WORSE. We reported black mold growing in the window sills, which were leaking in water. This was getting under the window sill as well, and the wood had become warped and raised. After 3 attempts to ask them to remove the mold and investigate its source (and three visits from maintenance personnel who entered the apartment, looked at the mold, and left), I wrote another email informing them that the mold was spreading and that they legally had 1 week to address this issue. I requested that they have a professional remove the mold, as it is a health hazard. Instead, someone simply painted over it. Of course it grew back. They then sent someone to "inspect" the windows. He tried to convince us that the black mold was dirt. I have a microbiology background and was not convinced that dirt grows up the sides of the windows in colonies. When we reported that the mold grew back, they sent people in day after day to literally hold a hair dryer to the windows for 4 hours at a time to "melt the ice" and then leave for the day. This was going on on days when my roommate and I were not in class, and we suffered through weeks of being woken up in the mornings or coming home day after day not knowing who would be in our apartment. Meanwhile, NOTHING had been accomplished except for them managing to raise our electricity bill $10 for all of the hours the hair dryer had been on. Finally, I came home one day to strange fumes in the apartment. I tried to open a window, and realized that ALL OF THE WINDOWS HAD BEEN GLUED SHUT. This is extremely illegal and they never notified us about this. We now had a combination of black mold growing in an apartment and windows that were glued shut. My roommate asked the manager about this and the manager actually got an attitude with her and snapped back that they will stay that way for weeks. Then I finally went to talk to her face to face and told her that it is illegal and a safety hazard and that the glue needed to be removed from all of the windows. Finally, they removed the glue 4 days later and have continued to send people in to "inspect" the leaky windows. Absolutely nothing has been done. Do not live here. The staff are beyond lazy and will do anything to save a dollar. Just an awful place.
