Resident 2011 - 2013

7/8/2013

My experience has been very poor but not unusual for this place. The nightmare started 2 years ago after my husband and I signed the lease. We were supposed to move in on one day, but the place was not ready and we had to wait a few days later. We found out the same day we were supposed to get our keys. Our leasing agent at the time was great and she was liked and respected by many in the complex. The other agent was/is not as friendly and short with you; it made you feel like she didn't want to be bothered. Sadly, the nice agent moved on to bigger and better things. Once we moved in, our air conditioner didn't reach the upstairs rooms . Our son who was almost 2 years old , would sweat so bad during his naps. We complained but were told that was the way it was. They did try to clean the vents but it was marginally better. Within 3 months, we started to see mice droppings. By fall, it was an infestation. There were holes in the furnace room (which was in our living room) and the mice were coming in the living room and into the kitchen. I will admit, we contributed to the issue, but they would not close up all of the holes. I found out that other tenants were having issues as well. Winter came and it was very cold upstairs. I was pregnant and eventually had my baby early. He needed the place to be warm to be healthy. I asked them to check the heat and they said that there was nothing wrong. It was clearly very cold- too cold for a toddler and preemie. I was told that if I didn't like it I could live elsewhere or use a space heater. This was the property manager at the time who said this to me. She knew I had a toddler and preemie. The maintenance people knew what was needed but could not do it without her ok. So we bought the space heater. We battled the mice up to a couple of months ago. They never fixed the problem. As far as the ac and heat, a very smart maintenance man checked the furnace and found a very dirty filter that was forgotten. It took almost 1 1/2 years to figure this out. Then the heat and ac could be felt much better We would have left sooner, but were not in a position to leave. Even until this point, the management has been difficult. We have moved to another state and are trying to close down the apartment. They expect a 60 day notice but will give out renewal notices 5-10 days before the 60 day deadline. They hold fast to their rules but don't hold themselves accountable. They will nickel and dime you for EVERYTHING! They charged us 1400 in damages alone for things they didn't need to fix. I am suspicious because i know the person moving there is someone who works for the leasing office. Plus, they change leasing specialists, except the one unfriendly person. All of the nice people seem to disappear. Lastly, I found my filing cabinet missing when I returned to clean our apartment. They dumped out my papers and left them on the floor. They didn't appear to take anything else. This is definitely the worst place we have ever lived. There are few things that I regret and moving to Valley Terrace is one of them. If you live here, don't be surprised to pay a nice sum for trouble, sub-par parking and attitude. I suggest you look elsewhere. It is not worth it!
