Resident · 2015 - 2016
My husband and I lived at Beech's Farm in Columbia, MD from 2015-2016 and our experience was horrific on so many levels. We constantly had issues with our apartment and it would take weeks, sometimes even months before those issues were half-solved (i.e. the towel bar handle in our bathroom would constantly break off the wall, when maintenance came to fix it they left two large holes in our wall). I would have to submit the same request numerous times. The worst was dealing with our AC/heating unit. It was completely dysfunctional and constantly made loud, disruptive noises throughout the night and stopped working altogether for periods of time. It was never resolved. There would be days when we would wake up in the cold winter night without heat. No resident paying rent should have to suffer like that. I would send numerous emails to the leasing office staff and again, it was never resolved. I submitted around 8 requests via resident portal and probably sent 5 emails directly to the assistant property manager (along with video proof of the dysfunctional noises). In addition to the lack of maintenance service, we also dealt with neighbors that left trash in the parking lot and the community grounds were not very clean/attended to (the lights in our building were always out). The cops were here practically every weekend (just one examples includes a late night domestic violence case happening right behind our apartment... so disturbing). In the building next to ours, we would see drug deals happening right in the parking lot late at night. I would never recommend anyone lease here. Beech's Farm was not a safe community. I never felt safe here. In addition to the horrific experience, we never received our security deposit back. We had no damages to the apartment and we left the apartment extremely clean. I followed up with the leasing office numerous times (both phone, email and in person) and response was weak (either I was told they were "looking into it" or I received no response). I ended up filing a complaint with the Howard County Office of Consumer Protection (you can do this is you never get your security deposit back or send you a letter as to why they are keeping it within 45 days) and even my case manager had extreme problems getting in touch management. Finally, several months later, my case manager receives a letter from Beechs Farm management admitting they miscommunicated and miss-calculated the final balance of rent & water/sewage fees and that's why they kept my security deposit. Apparently they sent 2 letters to me via snail mail to my old apartment at Beechs (yes, even though they had my new/updated address on file when I moved out). How could I dispute these charges if they were never mailed to my new address? I had mail forwarding setup so if they really mailed them I would've gotten them. When I reached out via email in July, I received minimal response from the assistant property manager and yet no mention of these letters that were apparently mailed to me. Now, I am in the process of trying to get in touch with the Property Manager and it is extremely difficult. I have called, emailed and no response. It's been days and no response. The lack of leadership and communication at this Gables Beechs Farm property is evident and they are never easily accessible for current or former residents. The Assistant Property Manager and Property Manager are rarely at Beechs Farm. The leasing agent at the office admitted to me they work remotely and are rarely in the office. I would never wish any prospective resident end up at Beechs Farm. You are better off anywhere else. To end on a more positive note, there are other, far more better living options in Columbia and I highly recommend living at a Bozzutto owned community. It's much safer, peaceful and the community staff is extremely friendly and helpful (and most of all, timely and responsive).
