Alterra used to be a really nice place when it first opened (the building is only like 4 or 5 years old), but it has severely declined since. Front desk people are just going through the motions. We've lived here for 3 years and they never remember us. They're never on the same page and information always varies depending on who you speak to. The occupants of Alterra have also decreased; more young, immature tenants are moving in. There is a consistent marijuana smell throughout the halls and in the garage. Residents don't clean up after themselves; there was literally dropped eggs in the hallway and no one decided to clean it. There's often dog feces in the hallways and around the grounds of the building. The maintenance people are the most competent and always greet you with a smile and work hard to try to keep the building looking somewhat presentable. Amenities include free coffee and a clubhouse that is usually filled with random people watching sports. The pool is basically a bathtub and it is only open for about a month or two in the summer. Parking is absolutely horrendous and unless you want to spend an extra $100 for the garage good luck. Hyattsville currently is not the best area so cars parked on the street get broken into on a consistent basis. Even cars in the designated overflow lot with proper hang tags are towed, with the front office offering no explanation or solution. The garage offers some solace but is always broken, allowing anyone to stroll right in. If it was four years ago, I would definitely recommend this place. But because of the decline that has happened and the position that it is in now, I would stray away, especially for the ridiculous price of a 1 bedroom. We are not renewing our lease this summer and it is the best decision we have made in a while.
