Resident 2002 - 2007

2/6/2007

I rented an apartment here at Kaywood Gardens sight unseen off the internet (I lived out of state). I got really fortunate. The apartments are pretty decent size for the money (granted I'm not appreciative of the rent increasing every year; but the neighbourhood is going upscale so it is understandable). They allow cats which is huge to me. I m a single parent on a tight budget. Dollar for dollar I get the most for my rent here. I live in a one bedroom with my elementary age child. He gets the bedroom I get a fold out couch. But for the cleanliness, safety and convenience to everything I could not do better. The front office staff has changed over the five years. Sometimes I like them; sometimes not. The maintenance staff is excellent. As soon as I file a report they are on it immediately. They are helpful, prompt, and good. This is very much a working class community. Parking is not assigned so finding a spot to park after 8 p.m. can be fun . The neighbours are really quiet; honestly in my building I m the load one and they put up with me so graciously. There are two washers and dryers in our building. There is also a central laundry room somewhere in the complex, but I personally have never needed to use it. I love the fact that there are grounds. On days I don t feel like taking my child to the nearby park or even down the hill to the community playground there is somewhere for my child to run around like a chicken with its head cut off. And of course the really big selling point - all utilities are included in rent: water, electricity, heat. Granted the apartment is cooled with only one window unit, but in the summer months for an extra $50 you can get a second one. I have never needed it. I love being able to run my A.C. 24/7 and not worry about my budget.
The major drawbacks in my opinion are: radiator heating (but come on the buildings are probably 50 years old, i.e. pre-central heat and air), and no dishwasher. That last one kills me; I hate doing dishes. I d like it if there were a pool, but no enough to move to neighbouring complexes that do have a pool. I ve met residence of those complexes and the rodents; bugs; and poor maintenance isn t worth that luxury.
Eventually I am going to have to move into a larger domicile. If I stay in an apartment I plan on staying here; despite the inevitable rent hike that I know is coming again this year.
