Alexander House has been in a vicious cycle. Too many management changes, poor selection of residents, premises badly kept and even vandalism (someone broke the mirrors of the exercise room and damaged some walls). The entrace hall is in shabby state. The front desk is a total mess, with pieces of paper all over the place, making staff not able to find any document management left for residents (once I had to ask three different door men until I was able to locate my document). The entrance hall chairs are totally worn out. The front doors and the elevators are scratched. The exercise room is dirty and outdated. Its only TV has been broken for over a year. The only comparable building in the neighborhood, the Lenox (same age and price, is in considerably better shape in all those counts(however it is ugly outside, so I dont want to live there). I dont think that the blame resides on the low income residents subsidized by the county, as I read in some comments though. The problem is plain bad management. Having said that, I think there is hope. First, the new management was able to improve things a bit. For once, they now have control who is packing where this was a total mess until a few months ago. They also seem to make a better effort at communicating with residents. Additionally, the building is so superbly located near the new Silver Spring downtown development, it can only get better. One has to be blind not to notice the shabby state of some of the premises, and yet the occupation level of AH seems to be very high. The leasing office rents the units as soon as they vacate. Either these people are blind or optimistic. I guess I am the latter. I am hanging on because I thing thinks will improve. Additionally, unlike you can put up with the ugliness of the Lenox, this is still the best apartment building in downtown Silver Spring, where I chose to live for professional and personal reasons.
