My husband and I were attracted to Alexander House because it was close to the metro (5 minute walk), has a sheltered courtyard garden, and the apartment layout we needed. The size of the complex was also a plus---big enough to have some amenities but not a small city. Its been a great move for us, and we happily renewed after our first year. The management have been friendly and helpful, maintenance has responded quickly when we had a (minor) problem, and the well-built building means we don't hear neighbors through the walls or ceiling. The balcony is great in the summer--we over look the courtyard and get to enjoy the outlook on the trees and garden, and watch the birds and the squirrels. We wanted a lower level (3rd floor) because we like this type of view, but know there are great views from the upper floors across to DC. The only noise issue is that if a window or the balcony doors are open--the rail line is nearby. Downside of being so close to the metro! The building had new management take over three months before we moved in, and they have spent the last year upgrading and carrying out a lot of 'deferred maintenance.' This has its down side with the water being turned off, some noise the week they replaced equipment on the roof, etc. that others have mentioned. The upside is that we have seen improvements in areas like water pressure, and as they finish projects we are having fewer inconveniences of this type. Most of the apartments are getting updates and even complete makeovers when new tenants move in as well. All in all we are very happy to be living in a complex where the management is investing in the building and improving things. The big problem with false fire alarms over the 2011-2012 winter was (as others have mentioned)a real pain, but the management did everything they could to keep us informed. The sad thing is that the beginning cause--a problem with the alarm/sprinkler system (see deferred maintenance above)---was fixed but apparently this gave someone the idea of pulling the alarms to enjoy the spectacle or get revenge on the management?). Several times. We have not had any false alarms for months, so we assume that the clowns have departed.....and hopefully will not feel moved to do the samme trick at their new apartment complex!
