I loved living at Alexander House. I loved it like Donald Trump loves Twitter. I loved it like Darth Vader loves to choke people. I loved it like people in DC love to start conversations by asking, "So, what do you do?" After nearly 11 years at Alexander House, I moved out only so that I could live with my girlfriend at an apartment building that allows pets. (Alexander House only allows "therapy pets.") Had we been able to make it work at Alexander House, we would've lived there. That's how much we both loved it. What makes it so great? First, it's the location. The super easy walk to Metro simplifies your daily commute. And the great array of dining (shout out to The Classics Restaurant!) and entertainment (AFI FTW!) options in downtown Silver Spring are fantastic. But being across the street from a courthouse is super, super sweet. You get enhanced police patrol every day of the year and, if you drive, the surrounding streets are among the first to be plowed after a snowfall. Sure, you're close to Metro and you're gonna hear some clackity-clack, but you get used to it. It's like living next to a highway; after a while, you just don't hear it anymore. And speaking of noise... I'll admit that I may have been lucky, but after nearly 11 years in the building in two different units on two different floors, I can frankly count on one hand the number of times I've had to knock on my neighbor's door and ask them to turn down the volume. (And in my experience, neighbors were understanding and apologetic in those instances.) I will say the outside volume seems to have picked up a bit over the last few years -- things like people being slightly boisterous when they come or go -- but don't let that stop you. It's the kind of thing you could experience anywhere. Staff and maintenance? Man, what can I say. I've gone through, I think, three apartment management services during my time in the building and they've all been quality operators. The current team (Avison Young) has been particularly responsive and helpful on all sorts of things. Everything from "can you get me an extra key for my girlfriend" to "I heard my neighbor has bedbugs, is that true?" gets a prompt and honest response. (By the way, my neighbor did have bedbugs. And they, like, dropped a grand piano on those things. Everything was handled quickly, effectively and efficiently. They never spread. And that's the thing to keep in mind. No apartment complex is immune. There are buildings that have had bedbugs and there are buildings that haven't had bedbugs yet. The important thing to know is how the building will respond not if, but when it happens. These guys know what they're doing and they do it right.) And before I forget: Lots of love to the maintenance team. These guys are truly friendly and helpful. Many of them have been there for years and across the multiple management companies. I would never hesitate to call on them, and they never let me down. You can totally trust them to be in your apartment while you're away, too. Good eggs. Grounds are the only category where I'm doing a four-star rating instead of a five-star rating. And I'm not telling you or the management team anything you and they don't already know. It's time for a renovation -- and one is scheduled to begin in 2017. You can have confidence in the existing facilities; everything is solid. The building just needs to up its game to favorably compete against the other, newer buildings in the neighborhood that have come online in recent years. I'd expect a rent price bump will follow, but as things stand now, you're still getting great value for your money. Was it nonstop wine and roses during my nearly 11 years in the building? No, of course not. Things happen. But things happen everywhere. No building is perfect. That being said... Scout's honor, if I could've stayed there, I would've. I was sad to say goodbye, but I'm happy to say Alexander House has given me a "gold standard" against which all future apartments will be compared.
